Garmin “Autoland” aka “Safe Return,” has been used for the first time, successfully.
Autoland is an emergency system, where a passenger can hit a big red button if the pilot is in incapacitated, which causes the airplane to make emergency radio calls, navigate to a nearby airport with a long runway and medical facilities, and conduct an instrument approach and landing, followed by a full shutdown when the aircraft comes to a stop on the runway. Large screens and voice announcements keep passengers updated along the way.
The nature of the medical emergency on Saturday, involving a King Air with an unconscious pilot, has not been disclosed.

Hey y'all 👋 I'm Emily, but friends call me Em — spelled like the dash! Guess it's time for an #intro post.
I'm a software engineer by day, and I lead a team working at the intersection of digital identity and usability.
Functionally, this means I grew up playing around in Macromedia Fireworks and learning to make websites with the middle school librarian, and nowadays I know far too much about #SAML, #MFA, #OIDC, #Passkeys, and go to lots of meetings 😮💨
I love music (playing or listening), photography, and getting outdoors! Teaching makes me incredibly happy.
I'm also a diehard #avgeek, licensed #amateurradio operator, uhhhh, I know a lot about transit busses? Tell me about your special interests plz!
Currently learning C++ because I'm insane, and learning to draw with #Krita because it makes me happy.

A few months ago, Seattle-based #Outbound #Aerospace was flying high, with $1.3 million in funding to create an innovative aircraft. Now its fortunes have fallen back to earth after a strategic pivot that fell flat. https://www.geekwire.com/2025/outbound-aerospace-winds-down/ #Tech #Avgeek #Startups
UPDATE: This update has been superseded by a further update, please see pinned post.
We are so back, but things will look a bit different...
In order to ensure that we don't unintentionally create a security or privacy risk, we've made some changes to the bot.
We will no longer have identifying info on the message body (i.e. no flight numbers or registrations).
Posts will be delayed by 2 hours - to reduce the likelihood that a plane is still in the air when we post the message.
No information about where the message was captured will be provided (i.e. no regional feeds).
So right now, we've started up the feed ingestion again, and we are building up our 2 hour buffer.
Trending, Top Shelf remain, the regional feeds are no more (sorry).
So, not gonna be quite the same experience, but better than no ACARS Drama!

This is wild: https://www.airbus.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-11-airbus-update-on-a320-family-precautionary-fleet-action
"Toulouse, France, 28 November 2025 – Analysis of a recent event involving an A320 Family aircraft has revealed that intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls.
Airbus has consequently identified a significant number of A320 Family aircraft currently in-service which may be impacted.
Airbus has worked proactively with the aviation authorities to request immediate precautionary action from operators via an Alert Operators Transmission (AOT) in order to implement the available software and/or hardware protection, and ensure the fleet is safe to fly. This AOT will be reflected in an Emergency Airworthiness Directive from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
Airbus acknowledges these recommendations will lead to operational disruptions to passengers and customers. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and will work closely with operators, while keeping safety as our number one and overriding priority."
