Had to travel by train today for work. It鈥檚 still mostly vacation period and so I was surprised about how busy it was.
On my way back, I鈥檓 realizing that today was the start of Sail Amsterdam, and it explains everything
In case you are into sailing or sail boats small, large or very large, new or old, Sail Amsterdam 2025 starts today.
Normally held every 5 years, because of Covid last edition got cancelled, so Sail is back after a 10 year period. This year it also coincides with the 750th anniversary of the city of Amsterdam, so all it set for a very special edition.

This is the corner of a hand-sewn #sail made in the #1800s. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are truly remarkable鈥攁 skill that has largely become a lost art.
Canvas sails like this were made from hemp, which was also used in clothing, ropes, and even the caulking that sealed gaps between ship planks. Hemp was favored over materials like jute because it was three times stronger and resistant to saltwater..
