Patrul was a great 19th century master of the dharma. He owned a metal cook pot, a cloak, and a copy of “The Way of the Bodhisattva,” and lived as a wandering mendicant. He never handled money. Didn’t make a big deal about it but if anyone ever gave him a piece of gold they’d find it later on the ground in the same spot they’d given it to him. #buddhism

@dariana @3goodthings - Went to my temple last night for the New Years Eve Service. We meditated, chanted, sung a gatha, and listened to a dharma talk. We finished with ringing our konsho bell 108 times (we each got to ring it a couple times each) to symbolize the releasing of the 108 kleshas.

It was fun and the kids loved ringing the bell. The bell is smallish but still decently sized and rings quite loud with minimal effort so it was wonderful seeing a small child cause such a large sound 😆

🪷 Buddhist Reflection: True love is not clinging to perfection—
it is compassion that endures suffering.

In #Buddhism we speak of the Four Immeasurables:

Metta (loving-kindness): wishing well even in difficulty.

Karuna (compassion): staying with pain instead of turning away.

Mudita (joy): celebrating even small moments.

Upekkha (equanimity): remaining steady when life shakes.

Love that stays through storms is love rooted in these qualities.
It sees your scars not as flaws but as part of your wholeness.
It chooses you again and again, even when it hurts.

True love is presence:
the quiet “I am here” in darkness,
the hand held in fear,
the laughter at your quirks.

It is a promise to walk together,
to grow, to endure.

#Love is not escape from suffering—
it is walking through suffering together,
with open hearts.

One more batch of striking photos of the temples Nanzenji (南禅寺) and Eikandō (永観堂) along the Eastern Mountain Range of Kyōto or the Path of Philosophy (哲学の道).

It hasn't been reported in the Japanese language news, but I heard sirens and ducked into the back of Nanzenji to walk along a little-known path along the mountainside by the old canal that runs from Lake Biwa to provide fresh water to Kyōto. But the rescue trucks went to the exact same place, and I saw rescue crew looking into the canal, and men going up with at least one stretcher. I didn't stick around, though, and I left, past gawking East Asian tourists. What did they want to see? I just wanted a contemplative walk, but it was an odd coincidence.
