Stranger Things and Star Fleet Academy are Gen X nostalgic wish fulfilment -- What if we had the freedom we had in the 1970s/1980s, but also had parent who cared about us?
(the big difference between ST/SFA and The Goonies or ET is that the adults are actually characters we know about rather than just plot obstacles to overcome)
Surprise outcome : the new #StarTrek Academy show is really … good! Outstanding performances by Holly Hunter and Paul Giamati (and of course Robert Picardo), great writing (including some very appropriate and startreky grounding in current events - family separation), solid production values and design … I’m in!
@yayKM has gotten really into Star Trek: Deep Space and a few weeks ago I remembered that I still had my collection of Star Trek Micro Machines miniatures that I got when I was in primary school, one of which was Deep Space Nine itself! From what I can tell the set was this limited edition collector's set, but the paint jobs on the ships aren't great, and the Deep Space Nine miniature in particular was quite bad.
I gave the miniature to @yayKM to put on her desk but with it sitting on top of the monitor stand, it really blended in with the grey of the stand and yesterday she suggested I could repaint it, so I did! Black prime followed by a couple of layers of drybrushing, then just some yellow in the windows and bam, infinitely better. I didn't realise quite how munted it was until I was repainting it (the docking pylons are quite bent), but fortunately with the correct viewing angle you can manage to make it much less obvious. 😅

This #StarTrek isn't about the Cold War or The War on Terror or The End of History. E2 convinced me this is about the USA since 1980, and particularly since 2016.
It's about our War on Children. The one here in the USA, and around the world. There's a reason the separation of mother and child is central to Starfleet Academy.
I'm cautiously optimistic. This might be amazing.
I don't think it breaks any NDAs to say production is rather happy Stephen Miller hates Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
And none of us believe he actually watched any episodes.
Thoughts about #StarFleetAcademy
I am a Fan of a Certain Age, and what I loved most about this 2-part series opener is how it addresses the being a teen dramedy for fans like me: The Magic Flute.
They couldn't have done it in a funnier, better way.
The Magic Flute is a silly, high-camp masterpiece. It's what SA endeavors to be: a way to talk about surviving catastrophe, rebuilding, and still keeping childlike wonder.

This line makes more sense than ever.
So, how do we all feel about the new Starfleet Academy show? I've only seen the first episode so far, and while I generally really like Paul Giamatti, I find the Nus Braka character grating. The rest was a very mixed bag for me, BUT at least they are trying something new, something people have been asking for for a while.

The writers of Starfleet Academy are even bigger nerds than me! So far, my favourite geeky moment so far is when the dialog mirrored a mistake the props department made in a TNG episode. And there are so many more references like that!
