This wolf eel and I are now best buddies because we share a common enemy (or supper choice) in those aggro prawns. Also, TIL that wolf eels, unlike morays, have great vision. #scuba #underwatervideo

Is it #octopus time? Always. This great pacific octopus unspooled its 1.5 metres+ and bimbled with me for about 15 minutes two nights ago in Hood Canal. You can see me furiously back-finning to keep it in frame, but the next minute or so are it close-touching the macro dome port (below the #gopro) and my dry gloves. So I guess you could say things are getting serious... #scuba #underwatervideo

This is only a few minutes later, but I'm not 100% if it is the same octopus. It looks more annoyed at being discovered than relieved at slipping back into a hole.

I'm not sure why this one is red. Most octopus can control their body color, but I'm also about 30cm away here, much closer than the previous shots. So it may be a combination of lighting, less loss of colour from the water, and octo-feelings.

Body and eyes of Wonderpus, Sogod Bay #Philippines #scuba #cephalopods

Body and eyes of red and white octopus protrude from hole in the sand. Both eyes are visible, and from this angle they look like they are on knobs sticking off the body.

The body itself about 3 times longer than wide, roughly lozenge shaped, tapering in behind the eyes.

Same octopus, heading for a hole in the sand.

Sogod Bay #Philippines #scuba #cephalopods

Same redbrown and white octopus (see alt text for first image in thread for more information). Compared to the previous image more "webbing" skin behind the tentacles is visible and only the tips of a few of the arms are out of frame.

A few seconds later my many armed friend had had enough of me and started speeding across the sand.

Sogod Bay, #Philippines #scuba #cephalopods

Same red-brown and white octopus "in flight". Body is streamed out behind the vertical eyestalk Y and the arms are more visible, also kindof flailing around.

This "Wonderpus" actually came back out of hiding to check me out after the rest of the group swam a bit farther away.

Sogod Bay, #Philippines #scuba #cephalopods

Red brown octopus body centered in frame, upper parts of arms fill most of the remaining frame. Head is shaped like a Y with eyes on the tips, with a lozenge shaped sac attached to the join of the Y and extending backwards. Arms have white bands on them, while head has more chaotic white markings on Y with white dots on sac.

Broadclub cuttlefish, Sogod Bay, #Philippines

I choose to interpret that raising of the middle digits as a friendly gesture. If this was a human I think those would be thumbs.

#Scuba #tentacles #cephalopod

Red brown cuttlefish with yellow and white accents hovers three-quarters on to the camera. One eye is clearly visible, while the other is partially occluded by tentacles. A translucent skirt is visible on the left. 8 tentacles face down from the face in a vaguely Cthulhu like way, while two central tentacles are extended almost vertically in an S-curve. Most of the background is sand, which some algae covered rock in the bottom right.

Last night's Hood Canal dive got off to an unpleasant start with water leaking into my housing. 😭 Seems I hadn't tightened the vacuum cap enough. Whenever I get the housing serviced, I'll have them take it off entirely---it's caused several leakages. After a panicked drying sesh, I got back in and came across this Dirona albolineata. One of many on a shallow wreck. But nowhere else. Just that wreck. Picky! #weloveslug #underwaterphotography #scuba

For the photo nerds, it's actually zoomed to 18mm on a 50% crop sensor (m43), so not really that wide angle.

Cushion star, Sogod Bay, #Philippines

Another closish-focus wide-ish-angle attempt.

By underwater standards this isn't super close; 22cm to the focal plane, probably about 10cm to the dome. Much farther than than that and you start to see more backscatter from particulate in the water, and also problems illuminating the scene with small strobes like I have.

The lens is at 12mm on mu43, which is wider than above, and the level of detail in background is higher. The subject itself is probably familiar to most people that grew up near an ocean, temperate or tropical.

#scuba

Blue sea star sits on a green algae covered rock. On the left there a few small (somewhat grungy looking) coral heads, along with a rock with some kind of encrusting coral / sponge. The latter has an interesting texture and light green dots.

Magnificent chromodoris, living up to its name.

This one of my my first "close-focus-wide-angle" attempts with a new lens. The technique has potential, but you need enough space to get the housing dome almost touching the subject. Here the distance to the focal plane is 14cm, which I'd guestimate is 1-2 cm from the surface of the dome.

Orange, white and black sea slug crosses frame from upper left to bottom right. The body has a white rim, followed by a wide orange circular stripe, followed by server black stripes, as you work to the center. The skirt is similar but starts with a wide orange stripe.

One of my favorite places to visit, and one of my favorite airports to fly in and out of: Saba!

A tiny Dutch Caribbean island, the runway is the shortest commercial runway in the world and has sheer cliffs at both ends. It's a load of fun, and the diving is great!

A distant view of a small airport with one runway, surrounded by water on three sides. There's a solar farm and a small terminal. There's lush greenery in the foreground.

The titan triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) remains one of the few sea creatures that I avoid at all cost since one handily took a chunk out of a fin many years ago. (When nesting, their territory is in a wide cone extending upward.) #scuba #underwaterphotography This beautiful subject was feeding over a bommie off Dharavandhoo, Maldives.

Time for a mid-week #weloveslug? Hood Canal conditions much better yesterday than the soup it was two weeks ago. I found a wreck with over a dozen of these Dirona albolineata--only in one place, however, and not a single other to be found. 🤷🏼‍♂️ #scuba #underwaterphotography And naturally only at night...
