Spalting, Sw. blåved, wood that is discoloured but not structurally weakened by fungi. My grandpa liked to do fine #woodworking in spalted wood in the 70s. I think it may have been a fad at the time in Sweden.

“I make collages as a hobby using all sorts of random material left over from other things. A friend recently gave me a carrier bag with a note, ‘hope these might be useful in your wonderful creations’.
It was full of beads, bits of ribbon, odd buttons, old wrapping paper and greetings cards, etc. It was a lovely gesture and will inspire me to create more artworks.”
What a lovely act of #kindness from your friend. A big thanks to the anonymous crafter who sent this in to us.

One of my oldest good friends basically one day said ‘fuck tech I’m going to be a carpenter. I’m going to make things by hand’ and
He not only did that, he actually does make things by hand (he specializes in Japanese wood working)
I love checking in on what he’s doing. He just gets better and better. Can’t wait to physically see him in person again when I can go back to the city where we used to live

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Japanese craftwork became a lifeline for a New Yorker as she contemplated a major move with her husband. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2025/10/13/voices/sashiko-embroidery/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #community #voices #sashiko #craft #japanesecrafts #expats #kyoto
