I stopped shopping online at Target when it stopped being supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. So when Target announced layoffs today, I looked to see if the press mentioned this.
Reuters, 2nd paragraph: "The move, unveiled by incoming CEO Michael Fiddelke in memo to employees on Thursday, comes at a time its share price has lagged rivals and the company has faced backlash for pulling back from its diversity, equity, and inclusion policies."
https://www.reuters.com/business/world-at-work/target-plans-lay-off-1800-employees-wsj-reports-2025-10-23/
CNN, 3rd & 4th paragraphs: The layoffs, which come ahead of the critical holiday shopping season, are the latest sign of struggles at the Minneapolis-based company. It has been been reeling from slumping sales and fierce blowback to its retreat on DEI programs.
Its decision to end some of those initiatives angered supporters of diversity and inclusion policies, who felt blindsided. Target had staked out a reputation as a strong corporate supporter of DEI.

The media often misrepresents Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi by using inflammatory labels that distort public understanding and amplify foreign disinformation campaigns undermining the country’s democracy. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2025/10/24/japan/when-media-distortions-threaten-democracy/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #commentary #japan #media #journalism #sanaetakaichi #academia #russia #china

BBC study "Audience Use and Perceptions of AI Assistants for News" puts it blunt:
"First – despite the errors we know can exist in AI summaries, many users perceive AI assistants as trustworthy. Our study found that just over a third of UK adults (42%) say they trust AI to produce accurate summaries of information. And this figure rises to half of under 35s."
I doubt it is much different in the rest of the world. The misinformation and errors generated by the AI tooling are one part of the problem, but the far more critical problem is that people accept the wrong information without question.

The intersection of journalism and social video is a dynamic, and busy place. It's always interesting looking at how things are changing…
As someone who studied Mass Communication in college, I am absolutely shocked by the little media coverage of the AI slop video published on social media by the U.S. president... where he puts on a crown, gets on a jet & proceeds to drop massive quantities of fecal matter on protestors of the No Kings day.
Had this happened 10 years ago it would have been front page news everywhere.
Are we so desensitized by his undignified behavior + AI slop that nothing shocks people anymore?
@_elena I heard about it in European news. But my spontaneous thought was: He provokes with his shit to become number one in the news and let people forget what is much more important: reporting about the protests, the millions on the streets against him. Nothing better to make a #narcissist angry: don't report about every of his farts. Report about resisting him, also in #socialMedia. Don't become an #echoChamber of #fascism and #fakes.

Decline of privately-funded science journalism in the age of Trump.

"Science journalism has been fragile for many years now: Outlets like National Geographic and Wired have undergone layoffs. Others, like Sapiens, have shuttered. The environmental publication Hakai Magazine shut down last year when its funder, the Tula Foundation, withdrew its support to focus on research efforts, for example (the magazine has since joined forces with bioGraphic). A few years earlier, the U.K.’s Wellcome Trust pulled the plug on its long-form digital science magazine Mosaic."
