My nephew moved to NL two years ago. He went back to Girona, but now he finally realized there's nothing here other than good food and an infernal summer heat that will burn your soul to death.

@iinavpov The difference between Space Race 2.0 (the en-commercialing) and the AI/data centre bubble is that when the bust comes, one bubble will leave useful infrastructure behind (and it ain't going to be AI/data centres). A few years out while a Kessler cascade sweeps LEO clear won't do much to prevent deep space missions and direct-ascent launches to GEO but it won't do Musk or Bezos any favours.

This kind of stuff is why all the conversations about how ActivityPub style federation is inferior to ATProto, blah blah blah was quite silly. Because we simply don't know what it's like to use ATProto at scale in a *true* decentralized fashion globally.
Wake me up when there are hundreds or even thousands of "instances".* Then we can compare the relative merits of these two protocols.
(Yes, I know ATProto doesn't promote the idea of instances, but the shorthand applies.)
@jaredwhite Really, it does have instances, they just call it something else, and the only existing one is owned by Bluesky because the infrastructure cost is enormous.
They just rebuilt twitter and have a lot of people fooled. But that's what it's really about: building the space to let people feel collectivist and simultaneously nostalgic for the "good old days" of twitter, even if those two things are add odds.

You can probably guess how rare and bad #disability representation is in kids books, so I really appreciate this picture book about #YayoiKusama . It talks in first-person about seeing things other people don't, a pumpkin talking to her, and living at a hospital. (Also about being poor, protesting the Vietnam war, and getting arrested.)
A lot of kids know her work and do polka-dot art assignments at school too; she's not just some adult celebrity they've never heard of.

Leaders of flag-raising group Raise the Colours Oxfordshire placed trackers on highway workers’ cars to find out their home addresses, the High Court has heard. RTC then attempted to intimidate the highway staff into no longer removing flags by repeating their addresses to them.
This is terrorism, but don't hold your breath for them to be proscribed.

@jducoeur I take a different view: these "LLM escapes" and collaboration incidents are garbage marketing promos organized by the LLM companies to generate news coverage by a gullible media, in order to juice the faltering private equity cash inflow they require to survive. They are not, in fact, "escapes", they're LLM-assisted human hacking attacks and they're being carried out by con men and crooks trying to keep their pyramid schemes going one week longer.
@cstross Unfortunately, I suspect you're incorrect.
I use these things for programming every day at this point (starting in April, which is around when they started to not suck), and they've gotten shockingly good at it (when used with care), remarkably fast.
I've been programming for 50 years, staying near the state of the art that whole time -- I know this field intimately. But Claude is not only producing code that is in the ballpark of comparable to my own (often aping my own style, even), it's now sometimes pointing out ways to do things better that hadn't occurred to me.
The *companies* are evil as hell, the *finances* are complete nonsense, and the industry as a whole seems certain to crash and burn a la the Dotcom Bust.
But the *technology* has, quite suddenly this year, become rather more useful than I had expected it to. So the stuff described in this article fits within the parameters I'm seeing in practice; I suspect it's largely true.

folks, i'm sorry to inform you that justin m. keyes, the primary dev of @neovim absolutely hated the idea of removing an endorsement by a bona fide fascist from the main webpage of the neovim editor.
what happened: i've opened a ticket asking to remove the heinemeier hansson quote; keyes responded to the ticket a few times, first with simply “don't care”, then with more angry elucidation, then closed as not planned, and finally the issue was removed altogether).
unfortunately i have only mail receipts, which missed the rage part of the episode.
