This kind of stuff is why all the conversations about how ActivityPub style federation is inferior to ATProto, blah blah blah was quite silly. Because we simply don't know what it's like to use ATProto at scale in a *true* decentralized fashion globally.

Wake me up when there are hundreds or even thousands of "instances".* Then we can compare the relative merits of these two protocols.

(Yes, I know ATProto doesn't promote the idea of instances, but the shorthand applies.)

@jaredwhite Really, it does have instances, they just call it something else, and the only existing one is owned by Bluesky because the infrastructure cost is enormous.

They just rebuilt twitter and have a lot of people fooled. But that's what it's really about: building the space to let people feel collectivist and simultaneously nostalgic for the "good old days" of twitter, even if those two things are add odds.
