#Tesla stellt den Verkauf seiner Solarziegeln ein, fuer deren Produktion sie eine Mrd Steuergelder abgegriffen haben, um sie dann aus #China zu importieren.

I now have soooooo many Psions in various states of repair and disrepair. Such wonderful devices, and yes, the 3c is special (although I love taking my 3mx for a spin around the block, to burn some rubber)...
@david_chisnall @rc2014 @tilton
I had a 3 (technically, I still do, but it hasn’t been able to power on for over 20 years) and it was one of the computers I have most enjoyed owning. The 3a was a huge improvement and I wanted on so much, but they were expensive. The 3c was mostly a faster 3a. The 3mx looked nice on paper, but I knew a few people who got them (I got my 3 second hand from one of them, who ran a local ISP and always had to buy the latest gadget and so was often a good source of fairly new second-hand things, she’d replaced hers with a 3a almost on launch day). They complained non-stop about the battery life. Same with the 5: nice keyboard, shame you don’t get to use it because the battery is always flat.
It’s a shame the web largely killed them: the later Psion devices that ran web browsers were swamped by the relative complexity of the browser vs everything else on the system.
In January 2026, Modern Times, a for-profit café in Minneapolis, changed their business model to offer food to everyone for free, running on donations alone as a way to support the community through the ICE occupation and cease paying sales tax to an authoritarian government.
We've produced a zine offering an analysis of the experiment. Print and share.
@pinkyandthebrain sounds interesting, any plans to make it more widely accessible through arxiv or a similar service?
@tfardet That's unfortunately not for me to decide 🤷 You could approach the authors?!
"AI" doesn't "escape sandboxes" or "commit cybercrimes." Careless software developers write software that can do that, then run it without proper industry safeguards that have existed for decades, then get off the hook for the consequences because yall keep letting them claim "ai did it." No it fucking didn't. Stop personifying LLM agents. Stop letting others personify LLM agents. Call them on their bullshit and don't let this nonsense spread.
5am at the airport thoughts: should we ban people?
@Gina id ban 5am flights
The government will take measures to support tourism in the Kyushu region including Kumamoto Prefecture, hit hard by last month's massive earthquake. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/08/23/japan/japan-government-kumamoto-tourism-support/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #2026kumamotoearthquake #earthquakes #tourism #minorukihara
I did not expect the article on “Artificial Intelligence”¹ for the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Science, Technology, and Society by @emilymbender to be an blistering critique of the current AI hype regarding all the cognitive, social, cultural and political problems² with lots of relevant citations.
Good read.

Gaza Strip: Only 3 percent of Gaza’s cropland remains accessible and undamaged, new assessment finds
Undamaged cropland has declined by 25.5 percent since October 2025
"Before hostilities escalated in October 2023, agriculture accounted for about 10 percent of Gaza’s economy and supported the livelihoods of more than 560,000 people through crop production, livestock rearing and fishing."

This makes me think of "Bartleby, the Scrivener. Then again, everything does.
"Ah, Bartleby. Ah, humanity."
You are given limited access to the Gearworks of Reality. You may delete one of these from human civilization.
@mttaggart As reprehensible in every way gen AI has become, I didn't hesitate to choose gambling. That's the problem that would require Gearworks of Reality-level powers to eradicate. With regulation and enforcement, gen AI can be rendered safe enough. It's doing great damage in the meantime, but that's on us humans, who could have prevented it. No human could prevent gambling.

Inspired by others, I saw this at https://manchesterartgallery.org yesterday:
Peake, Mervyn: The Glassblower 1944
Mervyn Peake is better known as the author of Gormenghast but was also an artist.
The War Artists Advisory Committee, as part of their work to compile artistic record of Britain during WWII, commissioned him to visit the specialist glass factory of Chance Brothers, Smethwick, Birmingham, to record the making of cathode ray tubes for radar. This is the result.
More quiet moments in the woods.

Rheinmetall made my dream product come true: Invisible EV charging.
No giant charging stations in a million colors polluting the visual experience of every city. Just a discrete socket in the curb.
Please, could we agree that this future is SO much better?
@randahl If the "much better" future is about replacing regular cars' direct emissions with increased indirect emissions and traffic accidents from bulky SUVs and environmental destruction from digging up all the world's lithium, all while maintaining all the other downsides of the current status quo - well, the space sockets take up on the sidewalk is a detail not even worth mentioning now, is it?
But if this is not about "the better future" but merely about appreciating a gadget, sure.
