Concept: technology that doesn't require an anxiety rectangle, an account, or any means of sending telemetry back to its manufacturer
@idzie
Adorable picture
@phillycodehound Hit the nail on the head. With 27 apps in the store, I spend way more time dealing with Apple's shifting API deprecations and Xcode updates than actually building new features. It's a massive tax on indie developers.
I have been submitting every paper and speaking at every conference and saying “yes” to every single cybersecurity clinic in order to be useful to Australia. I’m so grateful to be here, but this is my first weekend off in 7 weeks, and I’m very tired, boss.
@hacks4pancakes hurrah for sleeping in two days in a row! And going to local farmers markets! And getting the washing folded and put away!
Very interesting proposal:
"Between these worlds [academia and industry] lies a growing population of practitioners, independent scholars, citizen scientists, individuals working at the intersection of art and science, and retired researchers, who—despite losing formal institutional affiliation—retain deep domain expertise and a continued drive to develop new research ideas. @brembs This is why I've been totally vicious in my comments when it comes to academic gatekeeping of science.
I've run community science projects and have published with "amateur" scientists (who regularly teach abroad at academic institutions, but are happily skipped in broader collaborations).
Seeing this written is not some kind of revelation, this is people finally getting their heads out of their asses.
Louisiana’s Tough-on-Crime Policies Stand to Cost Taxpayers Millions More for Years to Come
---
The governor’s office has dismissed experts’ concerns that his criminal justice rollbacks could swell the prison population and plunge the state into financial disaster. We analyzed how his policies have already begun to impact the state.

I got a label maker and had the strangest experience. I opened the box, loaded the sample roll of label ribbon, inserted 6(!) AAA batteries, and it worked.
No apps to download. No account to log into. No firmware updates. No pop-over "helpful tips" about how it's "now enabled with AI" or whatever.
I just typed in the label I wanted and hit "print", and it did it. Astonishing. Nostalgic.
My favorite part of AI+math research is how quickly AI-generated results become outdone: https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.20579
Ofc, have to credit the AI for the inspiration to use that construction.

@tranquillity each run will spit out a lot of output, but what you care about will be at the top
@gabrielesvelto hmm, all of the crash reasons are:
- SIGSEGV / SEGV_MAPERR
- SIGSEGV / SI_KERNEL
- SIGSYS / SYS_SECCOMP
- DUMP_REQUESTED
- SIGSEGV / SEGV_ACCERR
- SIGABRT / SI_TKILL
- SIGTRAP / SI_KERNEL
I presume that's one of the fields I should be looking at?
you would download a pizza
I tried uploading one once, ruined the scanner…
Analysis: Fortune | 'It’s crazy’: SpaceX could set records as the least shareholder-friendly public company of all time
"It's crazy... I practice every day with the exchanges and regulators, and they would never accept this onerous and one-sided a structure for an emerging growth company... But because it’s Musk, and the biggest IPO ever, and that everyone’s vying to get a part of it, the exchanges are going along with it. It would never happen in my world.”

Crazy SpaceX cont.
Public funds from NY and CA are lodging a long-list of complaints
Public fund managers overseeing over $1 trillion in assets for the likes of police officers, firefighters and nurses, [say] the enterprise that promises to establish colonies on the moon... threatens a huge setback in shareholder rights... CalPERS and the two New York officials provide a detailed critique of a half-dozen, allegedly Musk-serving rules... as the antithesis of sound corporate oversight.
A joke I used to tell every coöp student and early-career person I interviewed:
“We only hire senior developers. The trick is, we hire them earlier in their careers.”
The same thing, without trying to be hip:
“Senior engineers are what you get when you hire a junior, give them interesting problems, surround them with people who know more than they do, and wait. That's it.”

Yeah, just what the United States needs today: more white racists.
6,000 refugees entered the U.S. since October. All but 3 are South African. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2026/05/22/trump-offered-white-south-africans-new-life-thousands-took-him-up-it/
@jeffjarvis it’s OK. Trump set the precedent for rounding them all back up, detaining them without charge, and then deporting them to Zimbabwe.
I’m just a simple gal with simple goals in life. I wanna do things I love, be with people who I love and who care about me and be appreciated for whatever minuscule contribution I can manage. Is that too much to ask?
@farah Nope!
