There is sometimes a legitimate reason to put the username and password field on different pages. If you are integrating with multiple third-party SSO providers in such a way that you need the username to decide where to send the person to log in, and you should never have access to their password, please do this. Otherwise, you are just making life harder for browser autofill for absolutely no reason and that is likely to make phishing your users easier. Stop it.

Why are so many people so sure that the big AI providers are losing money on inference? It reminds me of the comments about how Uber can never make money. Their unit economics were fine and they were only losing money because they chose to do so on customer acquisition.
In this case, I don't think it's even obvious that inference should be money losing today. API cost for frontier models has gone way up and the people claiming some cost for inference are relying on made up assumptions.
@danluu my impression from friends at frontier labs is that inference isn't anywhere close to losing money right now. Training is a huge money pit of course but inference is pretty profitable just measured on a cost per token basis, even at the subsidised monthly subscription rates.
(Obviously this is hearsay and you shouldn't treat it as particularly credible, but I personally think it's very likely to be true)

It follows discussion on "uncomfortable questions" about unintended consequences of our actions in-the-large i.e. what emerge at societal scale from individuals who think they are doing the good thing. The outcome might not be good, and FOSS movement might reflect their role on emergence of #BigTech and #AI. Today there is nothing, nothing at all, that withholds Big Tech and AI to say "thank you" and capture the #fediverse as their oyster, and we'll be complicit to bringing both yet even closer to our skin.
We must be able to operate more in unison and coordination.

In my blog post I briefly mention that related to Social experience design, and the mindset / perspective shifts that are involved, there is a different way to perceive our commons, which is less likely to lead to all kinds of expectation mismatches.
I mention the counter-intuitive first rule of Hedonic peer production again, of:

This turns things upside down to how we usually view our #commons participation e.g. in an implied "I created this FOSS project already, so now I deserve your contributions". That is a false notion. You should not be expecting that, can't expect that, and have firm drivers and motivators.

Again, this isn't to say that you shouldn't choose to have nice things. Buy stuff you like, shop at places you like. And when circumstances allow all of us to start making consumption choices in unison - as when Comrades Trump and Putin stage an orgy of demand-destruction for fossil fuels, catapulting the world into the Gretacene - then by all means, take the win. That is one of the rare instances in which we can do political change with consumption!

@pluralistic The corollary to shopping at places you like - don't shop at places you don't. There might be a bit of satisfaction in avoiding it, but also by treating Amazon as a last resort, you don't have to put up with the frustration of trying to find what you want to buy, when all they'll show you is what they want to sell you. The cost of getting tricked once into buying something unsuitable could outweigh any (probably fake anyway) savings.
I hate that there are creeps on here who come after those of my friends they perceive to be more vulnerable, but have all but completely left me alone.
It’s a canny tactic, intentionally or otherwise, because it unduly burdens them with the admin of blocking/reporting, but also more subtly sets up a condition where it’s easier for those of us *not* exposed to it to believe there isn’t a harassment problem on Mastodon. Trust me: there is, it’s gross and it shouldn’t still be happening.
