I had the great pleasure and honour to be interviewed by @techlore about the challenges faced by #freesoftware ( #opensource) projects are facing requesting #interoperability from gatekeepers like #Apple and #Google under the #DMA
I recommend to listen to @techlore host 's new podcast with my @fsfe co-worker @llas about what the #DMA actually does, why big cooperations are fighting it in court, and what it means for #FreeSoftware ( #OpenSource) and digital freedom.
Proud to hear @hen saying in the intro: "one of the most fascinating interviews I've done on this #podcast" 🤗

"The permissionless #innovation enabled by #FOSS allowed smaller and non-profit business models to flourish, letting organizations develop and provide high-quality technological products and services to market sectors often ignored by commercial companies. Enforcing the #DMA could consolidate #interoperability as a foundational policy for #Europe’s digital #infrastructure."

#Google and #Apple jointly work on enabling #DataPortability between devices to comply with the EU's #DigitalMarketsAct.
This is great!
Question is: Will this be an open standard that can be used by independent mobile operating systems like @murena's /e/OS, @GrapheneOS, or @LineageOS as well?

December has arrived, and with it, our last newsletter of 2025 🚀
🔸 we took part in the consultation on the Germany Stack,
🔹 exchanged insights at the Article 19 2025 #DMA Enforcement Symposium,
🔸 and gave #REUSE a new home on @Codeberg
Meanwhile, registration for the next edition of #YH4F is opened and we have new #SoftwareFreedom podcast episodes to listen to. 🎧

#FreeSoftware plays a key role in the effective enforcement of the #DMA.
The DMA was not written only for big tech competitors.
In this article for Tech Policy Press, we explain how gatekeepers continue to hinder Free Software developers and argue for DMA enforcement that also takes into account smaller and Free Software developers, volunteer maintainers, small non-profits, academic projects, and everyday users who seek control over their digital lives.
Hope you enjoy the reading!

#FreeSoftware plays a key role in effectively enforcing the #DMA. In this post, we explain how #Google and #Apple continue to hinder interoperability, affecting Free Software developers. In particular:
- How alternative Android ROMs suffer from the lack of device-related interoperability information;
- How #Apple's security paternalism has disabled alternative app stores for iOS and iPadOS.

My co-workers @llas @dario and the @fsfe volunteer Jithendra wrote an article for Tech Policy Press

"We must listen to small developers and community projects building #FOSS alternatives to gatekeepers’ services, because these tools ultimately make digital freedom tangible. A swift, effective, and vigorous enforcement of the #DMA is a condition for that to happen."
