In 1960, France detonated its first atomic bomb in the Algerian Sahara. Charles de Gaulle had spent the decade prior arguing that American security guarantees couldn’t be trusted in a serious crisis, that no superpower would risk its own cities to defend a junior ally, and that France needed weapons it owned outright.
The argument was simple: if you don’t control the means, you don’t control the outcome.

@decryption FreshRSS supports creating web scraping feeds. Haven't used this, but I have used their similar feature to grab article text for feeds with only snippets
@willhbr I use FreshRSS already so might give this a shot!
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party has swept to victory in key elections in opposition-held West Bengal state, conquering a bastion long held by its adversary. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/05/05/asia-pacific/politics/india-modi-opposition-west-bengal/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #asiapacific #politics #india #narendramodi
Forced amalgamation is wrong on so many levels. Getting rid of regional authorities based on ecosystem boundaries is absolutely the wrong approach, for reasons I laid out a few days ago;

But even if it wasn't, forcing these changes down our throats using Parliamentary supremacy is impressively antidemocratic. Even for the NatACT First regime, for whom antidemocratic is their middle name.
(2/?)
Yet more evidence that we need deep constitutional change that puts a permanent end to Parliamentary supremacy.
My preference would be something more closely resembling the old provincial system. Where most decision-making is done as close as possible to where public functions are carried out, and central government does only those things that need country-scale coordination (eg foreign affairs).
If we retain Parliament at all, it ought to be bicameral, with an upper house.

…“More than 85% of farmed animals in the UK come from stinking, dirty, shit dumping factory farms.
And when chickens can’t stand up, pigs are being gassed to death, our rivers are full of factory farm shit, and your Sunday roast comes with a side of antibiotics, it’s time to take a stand.”
@urlyman Less is more.
When you see the relentless attacks from other parties on the Greens across the media remember this:
They hate our plan to end Rip Off Britain.
They don't want a wealth tax.
They don't want public ownership & lower bills.
They're trying everything in their power to stop us.
I'm having a less than fun time with body image at the moment. This comes and goes but, right now, it sucks.
For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be thinner. Even when I was too thin, it wasn't quite thin enough.
And, at the moment, I am far from that.
I know that I "just" need to do more exercise and eat better, but that "just" is carrying a lot of weight in this sentence. Ironically.
No advice, thanks. I'm just venting.
@neil I feel you, I'm on the same boat

Last year I wrote this when Apple released their Pride merch, and I still stand by every word: https://www.macstories.net/stories/are-pride-wallpapers-and-a-watch-band-enough-in-2025/
Fuck them and their barely-pink washing.
@nileane It’s like they specifically chose not to represent the colour orange. Perfect metaphor for ‘Pride but only the colours we want to represent’!

Første gang jeg har sett situasjonen i USA omtalt som en «cold civil war».
@Erik_Haugaard I’ve been calling it that for many months now. Not sure when I began.
What idiot called it Go and not errlang?

My goodness @pluralistic's neologisms are so delicious:
"This is the defective reasoning that caused Comrade Trump to hormuz the world into the full Gretacene."
