@davidgerard Nuance to techbros is focusing on one small benefit and stripping away all other concerns. It's the one little fleck of gold at the bottom of a river they've drained dry to cool a data center.

a guy on one of those e-scooters almost killed my son, who coincidentally, was going to his job at a bike store.
had it not been for his helmet, he could have ended up with severe head trauma, paralyzed or in a coma. a co-worker was also biking along and got him to the hospital. the guy in the e-scooter ran away & disappeared.
in #nyc it’s usually a new generation of yuppies on those e-scooters. they think traffic rules don’t apply to them. never a helmet in sight.
@dreua @mhoye TIL : https://9front.org/ has anti-llm-policy too. see also https://codeberg.org/ethical-foss/open-slopware#linux-based .

jesus christ I just checked and he really is so far gone that he's just reviewing early access Grok features and praising them now
I guess when he wrote "we abhor Musk’s politics but we also disagree that participating on X means we have aligned ourselves with any of Musk’s views or actions", he also meant that he wants to be excused from using Musk's mass CSAM and disinformation machine too
@nileane Dude's just slop-poisoned now...and yes it is sad. Even when Federico blocked me on (irony) Twitter, I respected his work.

@TheBreadmonkey Perfect synopsis of all 7 seasons, Farpoint to All Good Things.
@tehabe @tante So much this. 💯
Frankly I'm of the opinion "opt out" on anything that takes away user rights/privacy/etc should be illegal.
It's worth noting that, generally, in anything that sends private info, it has already done so by the time you get to the opt out option. At that point you have to hope they'll honor the request to delete the info after the fact (and not just say they do...) and that it won't be stolen by "hackers" in the meantime.
@stux I really cannot abide the current fad for hardcoded subtitles, particularly when done like this. I can't look anywhere else, I'm compelled to follow the words.
Makes the whole point of it being a video redundant.

The Privilege not to Rush
This code couldn’t be rushed, because it had to be right. Often we had approached the same problem a few times already, across projects, from different angles, and then at some point what you do is, you try to hold all the needs and tensions and trade-offs you’ve encountered in your head at the same time, until an implementation crystalises.

new newsletter!
Folks in my hometown area along Lake Ontario are having fits on Facebook about Google Maps relabeling the lake. I remind them, “if Google Maps is willing to relabel Lake Ontario to make the government happy, just imagine what they’d do with all that data they’ve grabbed from you to make the government happy”.

Google's AI now scans your emails and attachments, bank statements, tax files, medical letters, all of it. It turned on by default, and there's a class-action lawsuit over how.

@Tutanota Google also commandeers 4GB of your computer's hard drive without your consent to install a local component of Gemini. When you uninstall it, it REINSTALLS with a Chrome update.
Just stop using Chrome. Use LibreWolf or something.
Was going to make a silly comment about this but it is legitimately very interesting...
