@timstevens Goodness, the tire wear — I second that gripe. And the tires for our Tesla aren't cheap.
@stshank @timstevens Same here. EVs’ tend to weight significantly more than fossils, that you can’t really change.
The fact how you drive makes a huge difference. The raw power in EVs puts a lot of pressure in tires - but only if you use it. Smooth driving, letting cars roll, accelerating slowly and avoiding use of the breaks helps a lot in tire wearing.
Relaxed driving not only consumes less energy but also wears tires much less.
What owl did we hear?! We are near in a wooded park in vancouver tonight and we heard an owl I've never heard before.
It was definitely an owl and a possibly juvenile owl calling back and forth. The adult owl had a low hoot of three short hoots and a long hooooo. The juvenile was a loud squeaky squawk.
It went on for a long time but I couldn't record it with my audio as the background noise was too loud. I gave a try with merlin id and looked through all the likely owl calls and it didn't hear any that came close. It sounded fairly big but I know that can be deceiving. Anyone have any thought as to a less likely owl it might be?
Have you ever ran out of fuel while driving a car?
My post disappeared, so trying this again:
I can't find the setting to mute boosts from a user. It used to be in the three-dots dropdown on the user's profile, but now the only option is to mute the whole account.
What the..? Help.
New blog post: Proposal for a dedicated archive site for #Wikipedia
https://blog.legoktm.com/2026/08/28/proposal-for-a-dedicated-archive-site-for-wikipedia.html
In February when English Wikipedia banned usage of archive.today there was a bit of a crisis in needing to find alternative archives.
As far as I know, no solution has actually materialized, so I thought I'd at least write down my idea.
In short, I think the social and legal parts of this are far harder to get right; in comparison the technology seems pretty straightforward.

As much as I love computer science, there is so obviously a moral rot in this field that goes back to the absolute beginning. McCarthy, Minsky (who died before his Epstein connections were made public), many many others…
We cannot move past this moment until we root out the human-eliminationist, misanthropic, eugenicist ideology.
@esoteric_programmer @RogueAmoeba I was dubious at first, since Audio Hijack for the sightlings is a drag and drop and VERY visual. But I’ve taught four visually impaired folks over the past few years to use it (with them driving) and they all got the hang of it.
@esoteric_programmer @RogueAmoeba I haven’t taught anyone Loopback, but just because they haven’t asked!

Truly superb, @spsheridan . I got chills just like I did when it happened. BTW, that was a fourcamera shoot, by the way with audio mixing between them. For example, audio of the audience was from the DJI Osmo 3 mic, but laid over the video from the 4K camcorder.
I think it’s super, super important to articulate a horizon that’s both desirable and practically achievable, however improbable or unlikely it presently seems.
It allows us to begin mapping out the concrete steps it would require to get from here to there, which is the only way to get around the Jamesonian, capitalist-realist “easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism” problem.
We have to devise ways of allocating resource and seeing to our material-energetic provision that take the full compass of human complexity, contradiction and frailty, that do not require us to imagine a land peopled by a New Man [sic] or purged of contestation, that can actually be accomplished, and that seem like reasonable conditions to aspire to — a place we’d want to live, people we’d want to have as neighbors, a settlement we’d enthusiastically assent to. I’m just not content to wallow in the wrongness of our world without at least trying to see if we can’t do better together.
