And just because scale is hard to tell from the photo and I have loved this fact since I learned it, this little friend is just a bit larger than a House Sparrow.

A fearsome mini-raptor! I love them.

Another fun fact is that they are one of the main predators of chickadees. When a chickadee chick-a-dees as a warning call, the number of β€œdees” can often be preportional to the perceived threat. In one study a chickadee β€œdee’d” 23 times in the presence of a pygmy owl!

A very small, sparrow-sized owl sites perched in a young, bare cottonwood tree at dusk. Its features can barely be distinguished in the low light, with the brighter striped belly seen on one side and its stubby tail just barely visible behind the trunk of the tree

Climate category, first place: The Collapse of Green

β€˜This drone photography captures the forest fading under the weight of extremes. Floods and droughts have silenced the eucalyptus – some fallen, some standing like ghosts. Green life turns to grey, echoing the slow loss of balance in nature.’

Great news, everyone! The owl who fell into a cement mixer is all cleaned up and ready to return to the wild and, perhaps most importantly, makes this facial expression when being fussed at by the humans!

Owl described as β€˜fighter’ set to fly free after falling into cement mixer in Utah

Staff at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab spent days cleaning the concrete-covered great horned owl
a great horned owl being held by an animal rescuer who is examining his wing. The owl has his eyes half closed and looks like he's definitely plotting something.

Detox Doodles!

This is a habit of drawing something every time I feel the urge to scroll unnecessarily. It helps stop the bad habit and start a new good habit of sketching daily!

This page is all about owls, who are surprisingly expressive!

#art #owls #sketch #DetoxDoodles #inkart #sciart

Sketchbook page of green pen owl drawings. There are 7 owls on the page with various expressions. The largest owl on the top right is standing on a perch. The second largest owl is on the top left on a perch looking at the viewer. On the bottom of the page are various smaller drawings of baby owls.

In case you missed it, the excellently cute "Owls in Towels" has a new account on the Fediverse at:

πŸ¦‰ @owlsintowels

If you were previously following their old account you will need to manually refollow their new account, as their server shut down before they had a chance to transfer properly.

If you don't know the account, when wildlife homes take care of owls they often have to wrap them in towels to stop them flapping about. This makes them look very sweet! πŸ₯°
