Tech job listings you should run from at all costs
@davidgerard People always think I'm exaggerating that none of the "AI Ethics" people have any formal philosophy, ethics, and in most cases CS background. They read Sci Fi and fanfic and get offended when you say stuff like "this was settled in a platonic dialogue, 3000 years ago". They actively distain anyone with any real knowledge.
Half the Kremlin's cash comes from oil and gas. Before the war, a single day of EU purchases funded 76 missiles like the Iskander.
Even under sanctions, you still fund 6 a day - that's 2,190 missiles a year. Today, Russia relies on a shadow fleet of aging tankers to move over 80% of its seaborne oil - and now, its LNG. But banning these ships targets the symptom, not the cause: it's our continued demand for fossil fuels that keeps them profitable.
Update. "A leading House Democrat [Jamie Raskin, D-MD] on Tuesday called for an investigation into new whistleblower allegations that the #Trump administration forced #universities it deemed politically incorrect into settling #antisemitism cases despite flimsy or nonexistent evidence."

I just poured coffee beans into the hopper above the grinder, without removing the lid.
That’s how my day is going. How about yours?
@ami_angelwings Shevek, in The Dispossessed by Ursula Le Guin, gets extremely drunk and sexually assaults the hostess at a party when he gets her alone in a room.
@KevinCarson1 @ami_angelwings This is mine. It was incredibly disturbing.
@luc0x61 @mttaggart I noticed this same thing! They used a Microsoft product to verify that the safest AI tool is Microsoft’s AI tool? Is this a joke?
I just read an Ezra Klein article about politics and social media, and while I'd prepared myself with extra stretches so I didn't hurt myself from repeated eye rolls I found the article actually . . . . pretty good.
I'm very disoriented now.
@MichaelTBacon
He's been right about housing policy and the pitfall of local control for years.
But, oof, it hurts my brain reading him on basically anything else.
@mttaggart we all want the autodocs we were promised in sci-fi, but genAI is not that.
PS: medicine is already a field suffering heavily from biases. Adding automated bias at scale is gonna literally kill millions more of us.

Computer club newsletters were invaluable information and learning resources back in the day.
We hit the ground running yesterday when we arrived back home. Our annual sealift arrived Friday and the ship would be done Saturday afternoon. We have five crates, plus more from the lumber supply business here.
Sealift day is a little like having all your birthdays at once on the day the circus comes to town.
Here’s the MV Zélada Desgagnes at anchor.
We only opened 2 crates that had our household stuff. The largest, 8’ x 8’ x 4’, was packed with stuff, and shuffled from the crate to the living room, to (mostly) the spare bedroom and other places it will live. The other crate was mostly solar, tools, and fuel drums, but had household stuff as well so it needed to be opened. #Nunavut #Sealift
@NunavutBirder I understand a little bit as I've watched a few of those "reality" shows where the supply ships service you up north. "High Arctic Haulers" and the two ships featured are of the Desgagnes line.
Friends, have you seen the investigation on UK students, including those at Oxford and Cambridge, hiring Kenyans to write their papers and dissertations?
I assume it wasn't cross Atlantic news as the media only seems to be interested in laundering eugenics into the mainstream.
Think about the audacity of them telling Black people that we're subpar DEI hires and frauds such and these students hiring Black people to do their work for them and pass it off as their own.
@timnitGebru Where do you think ChatGPT learned from ?

Doesn't seem to have a modern algebra per.se but he's super clear about actually explaining terms used. (Ideal is on FT page 7)
For lengthy and example laden, Dummit & Foote is still the best text as far as I know.
@d_rift i have four recs for you, in a moment:
Back at New England Center and Home for Veterans in Boston today for the Sunday brunch ☕️ shift! Honored to serve alongside long-time volunteer and veteran Ted, as well as fellow volunteer Wallace.
⭐️ Showing up in person is just one way to back our veterans. If you can’t make it out to volunteer, you can still make a positive impact:

I just discovered "OpenLogi" an open source control software for pretty much all Logitech peripherals. It's available for macOS, Windows and Linux <3
@hukl But they do not support all buttons of my mice. ☹️

There is currently no way to link to a thread that will open in the users fediverse instance.
Maybe FEP-3b86: Activity Intents will solve this problem?
