To be honest the distinction between a sham scientific society and a real one feels blurry to me. I was advised to join IEEE hoping that at some point they'll give me an award or title for my CV. But you pay thousands of $ over a career for this.
The claim is that these societies represent members' interests. Maybe that's partly true, but the main example I know of from the IEEE is that they lobby against publishing reform that would make science better and reduce costs wasted on publishing.
They're also bureaucracies that serve themselves foremost. It takes the membership dues of around 10,000 members just to pay the $1.1m salary of the executive director.

I think it is common, across human society, for things like IEEE to be things that , roughly speaking, work to increase the salary of the CEO
a clear example is farmer milk co ops in the Northeast, started by dairy farmers so they could make money, the co ops are now like IEEE

I also improved the accessibility of the generic about dialog majorly on both platforms, now the collapsable panes read as buttons to both VoiceOver and NVDA, the content inside of them are real text fields instead of static text, VoiceOver can read hyperlinks properly now, and I've got more, half already merged, and am not done. #opensource #wxwidgets
@TheQuinbox Oh wow I hope they get merged, does one of those PRs include the dark mode checkbox fix or is my WxPython library gonna be useful for a while, and also maybe looking into doing something similar for WxDragon for Rust.

Health insurance has been a fun ride in self-employment. First, I ponied up for a huge cost increase in order not to lose my primary care physician. A month after committing to hundreds of extra $/mo my favorite doc stops accepting the pricy insurance and I have to change docs anyway. 6 mo later the insurance company drops policies for self-employed people and I join the ranks of the uninsured. They get to keep all the premiums I’ve paid but don’t have to give any coverage in return. Neat trick!

C’est marrant parce que depuis 20 ans, y’a des gens qui tentent d’alerter sur tous les trucs immondes qui pouvaient arriver si on faisait confiance à Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, etc…
On nous a traité de paranoïaques.
Et bien la réalité est bien pire que les pires prédictions. On n’était pas parano, on était en fait optimistes.

Ça ne change rien. Vous êtes encore une gigantesque majorité à utiliser ces outils parce que "plus pratique".
#ParkRun 135. Only the fifth new location! I won't bore you with it (too much) but it was a glorious morning and I obliterated my all-time PB by a minute and seven seconds. It didn't feel great and I was trying to not push too much and burn out, but apparently it was literally the best run of my life. Weird, eh? Also it didn't occur to me when I bought bright yellow trainers that wearing them with a bright yellow tshirt and black shorts and hat.... I look like a massive bee. Anyway am thrilled to bits and staying in a converted horse house (haunted by pigeons) for the weekend - got rid of youngest with my lovely bro and sis in law (also staying down here) and we're now off to a wedding. How absolutely marvellous. I hope you're having a great weekend. Xxxx

🎉 Excellent achievement there Mr Bee-n.
Didn't resonate a lot with the characters this time, they sometimes treated each other pretty badly.
But I loved the detailed descriptions of some very cool user interfaces and of a simplified cellular automaton world! And it was fun to see how what the characters do when time stops being a finite resource.
Thanks to @23n27 for the recommendation! Think I'll pick up one of Egan's short story collections next.
