They are indispensable tools in the theories of partial differential equations, quantum mechanics, Fourier analysis (which includes applications to signal processing and heat transfer), and ergodic theory (which forms the mathematical underpinning of thermodynamics).
oh, so all the bullshit
John von Neumann coined the term Hilbert space for the abstract concept that underlies many of these diverse applications.
oh, the nazi funded by rockefeller to make up the concept of game theory decides to give credit where it's due
The success of Hilbert space methods ushered in a very fruitful era for functional analysis.
since when are mathematicians successful
OMG... this is so spot on
🔇 🔇 🔇 My book, Deep Unlearning, is now available for preorders! I don't know how people write so many books because this one took a lot out of me. It turns out, I had a lot to say 😂, with editors cutting out 50k of my words 🫣
✴️ You can now preorder it at https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Deep-Unlearning/Timnit-Gebru/9781668093078
✴️ Is there a local bookstore that you think should order this book? Can you let me know, or, even better, let them know?
✴️ Is there a place I should plan to come for a book tour when the book is out? Can you lmk?
@timnitGebru the #Carriageworks where #CoryDoctorow just spoke
Finally got to the point where I've started implementing integration testing for the side effects of Add/Move and Remove activities received through the client to server ActivityPub API.
Why should software paid for by taxpayers stay locked behind proprietary licences?
If it's public money, it should be public code. 🖥️💶
Free Software gives everyone the right to use, study, share and improve it. Plus it is supporting transparency, innovation, and competition..

Yeah but it's totally fine, all those times HuggingFace grabbed our code off github using opt out.
Or partnered with Software Heritage to build a dataset of the code SH "archived" of every fork. Again using Opt out, twice.
It's just fine.*

@davidgerard surely people will enjoy the ear cameras that read to them and the category of phone that’s most known for carriers begging people to downgrade to them because they’re extraordinarily expensive and break almost instantly
what do you mean you don’t want surveillance cameras in your ear and a scam phone
The Alien Fortress II (2024).
This is the type of stuff I wanted to draw when I was a kid.
If you live outside of the United States,
do you know if your country has a plan if the US government decided to cut access to Google, Microsoft, and Amazon products overnight?
What would happen to your work?
What would happen to your hospitals?
What would happen to your emergency services?
What would happen to your banks?
Imagine overnight, for all those public services and private businesses, no more Windows, no more AWS, no more Google and Microsoft office software, no more remote files storage, no more emails, no more online maps, no more videochats.
What would happen?
Is your country prepared?
@Em0nM4stodon I read the question every days in France and I don't understand why it's not totally pointless as question.
GAFAM spend billions to be every where in our infrastructures. Moving out or cut it would be the stupidest move ever. It's a stupid question, it won't happen. It's like asking "imagine USA removed oil extractor from Irak, what would you do?" they won't that's why they came. That's how they hold the power in us. It makes no sense they would just give our freedom back for free

Supporters of neo-Nazi Jake Lang were again shut down today in California, when they tried to harass and disrupt a local Islamic Center and Catholic Church.

(I don't know what's worse: Harvard's open disdain for education and standards or the suckers who pay 700 bucks for it.)
learning about a hilbert space https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilbert_space losing my fucking shit
It extends the methods of Euclidean geometry and calculus from the two-dimensional Euclidean plane and three-dimensional space to spaces of any finite or infinite dimension.
do you know what this fucking means?
david hilbert got so fucking pissed that albert einstein described a coherent physical regime in 4 dimensions that he instantly decided I KNOW I'LL DO INFINITE FUCKING DIMENSIONS NOW

sighh. searching for flats is so demoralizing. i did find an app that helps, but it's hard to help what is fundamentally a supply issue.
@echo Micro tip: I heard that posting a query on wg-gesucht could help. Some people I know got offered a very good flat by an agency this way, and they are not the only ones. BUT they were a couple, which might very much have influenced the agency in their favour.
I'm looking Volume 28, Issue 4 of the "The Mathematical Intelligencer" journal [1] which is published on 2008-11-07 . I contacted Springer but they said they only sell the issues from max 2 years prior. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on physical copy of that issue?

Sorry, the app encountered an unexpected error
