In contrast, I do love it when @pluralistic drops ruthlessly well-researched factoids like this into a conversation;
"The material bill for solarising and electrifying the planet - so all the stuff we would need, all the minerals we would need - it's about a 17th of what we dig up every year."

There's a blurry line between being sceptical enough to avoid getting sucked into greenwashing and too sceptical to accept any good news.

What it *seems* like you're saying is;
Because each person is unique, nothing can be said about populations in aggregate.
Which is clearly wrong, so it seems unlikely you're putting that forward as an argument. But it's equally clear it's not what intersectionality proposes, so it also seems unlikely you're saying it is.
Can you seen why I'm confused?

@sj_zero
Let me supply an example to show why I think it's observably wrong that nothing can be said about populations in aggregate, or slices thereof.
"When the policy environment rewards enshittification, enshittifiers rise to the top of every company. Investors demand it. ... We could fire Zuck and all his bloodless billionaire pals tomorrow and a new cohort would step right into their shoes."

Revisiting this essay from @pluralistic & I am reminded of a primary school teacher I happened to fall into coversation with. She mentioned that there were a number of #Native kids in her class. She was struck, whenever there was a lesson or an exercise that called for kids to compete against each other, the Native kids just Would Not. Their way was to arrive at a consensus, & there was just no way to shake them loose of that.

I really really really want somebody to find an excuse to get #CoryDoctorow & #HeatherCoxRichardson on a stage to have a conversation. The interference between their two viewpoints & knowledge bases would, I'm almost certain, precipitate out some •very• interesting thoughts & insights.
"But another way of saying 'technocrat' is 'someone who is very good at their job'."

I don't think that word means what you think it means Maybe you meant 'bureaucrat'?
A technocrat is someone with power in a technocracy. Like Melon Husk or Xi Jinping. Or Tony Blair, see the Adam Curtis series The Trap.
Every time I think I've trawled the depths of how venal capitalists can be ...
"It turns out that halal cart vendors each have to pay tens of thousands of dollars to economic parasites who've cornered the market on food cart licenses, which they rent out at exorbitant markups to vendors, who pass those costs on to New Yorkers every lunchtime."

"One of Biden's best photocopier kickers was and is Lina Khan. She embodies the incredible potential of a fully operational battle-station, which is to say that she embodies the awesome power of a skilled technocrat who is also deeply ethical and genuinely interested in helping the public."

Best blog passage of 2025 😅
Professor Tim Wu and @pluralistic's talk in Oxford tonight was definitely interesting.
Coming from the hacker world and _not_ the academic world, it was a bit of a different vibe from other talks on this sort of topic that I've attended, but it was definitely interesting hearing from the other attendees.
In fact, as someone who's already very familiar with Cory and his work, it was almost _more_ interesting to talk to the academic folks about their experiences, perspectives, and thoughts on the talk.

Cory Doctorow believes that the economic crash that will ensue when the "AI" bubble finally bursts will make the GFC look like a mild wobble. Worse, there's nothing any of us can do except burst the bubble as quickly as possible, to reduce the scale of the damage. Bleak stuff, but his logic is hard to fault;
