If you don't trust your OS or hardware, things get very complicated quickly (and mostly hopeless).
@marcel i'm specifically concerned about the global nature of the randomness output that comes from the OS and the global nature of the "entropy" inputs which can be affected by any process. i believe the RNG state should be seeded by and remain local to the application for security. i believe the OS may be able to provide a limiited amount of seed input, but it can't share that with other processes, and it should be considered a security boundary
I had a great few days in Oslo, going on a unicycle ride with @Velocipede Rider and meeting up with @ltning and @Anders Gulden Olstad at their office, visiting the retro computing museum there - and enjoying their very fine coffee.
Then there was the incident where @Øystein B helped me weld my bicycle frame to get it back on the road. Thanks again for this!
The #fediverse is such a wonderful place, full of all these friendly and helpful people! By the way, @Ruarí Ødegaard and @ltning, you guys should meet up for a unicycle training session, @ltning mentioned that he rode unicycles in the past. (It was only for the lack of time that we didn't stop at your office to offer a go when we rode past yesterday, @ltning)
I hope I'll be back some time in the future.

#TTRPG #worldbuilding thought: How do religious institutions in your setting finance themselves?
The most common answers seem to be "donations" and "tithes or taxes", because that's what most people today know. But looking at German history, quite a few monasteries actually specialized in some kind of trade. Brewing beer was popular, as was cultivating wine. And some even developed expertise in mining and construction, and hired themselves out as consultants!
So, what else might your temples, churches, monasteries or whatever do in order to generate some extra income?
@juergen_hubert
Selling excess food production?
They grew crops, kept animals and had artificial ponds for fish. Maybe carp?
Carp might also help sales of other things as they are a bit tasteless?
Did any charge for education?
I'm embarrassed to write that I don't know how it worked in Ireland from maybe 5th C. to 12C (Normans arrive) to perhaps 16th (Henry VIII).
It's not mentioned in my Celtic Otherworld series how it works, except there are no monks or nuns & earlier they did education.
Three episodes in to the latest season of Ted Lasso and it has to be said…
It’s not very good…😳🤦🏼♂️😢
I was really looking forward to this season but I’m afraid there’s just something missing this time around…
It’s not particularly funny, it’s poorly acted (the soccer scenes are AWFUL), and the storylines are pointless and/or confusing.
@KingShawn It’s an odd thing. I was quite excited that Ted Lasso knew when to stop. It was finite. It didn’t run the risk of going too far. Leave them wanting more, etc, which is what a lot of British comedies did in the past. But no. There’s money to be made, so…
With the Iran war now at a costly standoff and crises from Ukraine to Gaza still unresolved, U.S. President Donald Trump's ambitious foreign policy agenda appears stuck as he heads into November's midterm elections. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/08/22/world/politics/trump-midterms-foreign-policy-analysis/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #politics #iran #us #middleeast #ukraine #russia #russiaukrainewar #donaldtrump #congress #gaza
"By covering fields with solar panels, farmers generate clean electricity and shade crops, reducing evaporation and mitigating heat stress. (...) All the while, the program’s organizers will collect data on the performance of plants and panels, which will inform how to deploy agrivoltaics elsewhere. (...) Ultimately, the simple application of solar panels promises to make agriculture more resilient as temperatures continue to climb."
It looks like agrivoltaics is here to stay.

"According to the research paper, pasture covered by solar panels showed 38% less grass production compared to uncovered pasture, while lamb gains were comparable to those in normal grazing areas. This case suggests the viability of a concept that allows land to serve as both an electricity source and grazing land (...) the lambs consumed less quantity, but more quality food, and the numbers worked out almost perfectly"
And it works for animals, too.

TIL about @mosscap / #Amiko, a human friendly fork of Ruby on Rails, in response to DHH's politics.
I'm actually learning a bit of Ruby atm to understand OpenProject's back-end code a bit better.
(And yes, I live under a rock)
@Gina we're glad you found us! for some of us (like the person typing this right now) this is actually the first time we've contributed to an open source project.
@neuralreckoning hadn't thought of this, I just take the spiders out when I see them..
@elduvelle I used to do that but they kept falling back in.
oh, ja!

well ok arguably that one's fine if you're worried about leaking information about the internal state over successive outputs. but it contributes to the misconception that entropy is like a fountation that peters out and needs to be restored. if you use a secure generator function then each new bit is as unpredictable as the last one
reseeding because the crypto module refuses to give you more randomness unless you give it whatever bullshit you can find is a great way to get adversarial randomness

Imagine waking up in someone else's life, and trying to make sense of it. Over, and over again.
Every time I move my eyes or turn my head, I'm reborn into a new moment, with its own unique perspective. When I shift my attention again, that moment is gone, never to return. A new one takes its place.

There is visual content, some of it beautiful. But that's just the wallpaper. The full journey folds all the senses into the one unique moment existing right then, then resets them for the next.

Thanks @albertocairo!
That's awesome! If you ever fancy a trip to the UK I think you'd love https://www.communitiesconference.co.uk/ and/or https://www.radicalroutes.org.uk/next-gathering/

@da5nsy more #cohousing knowledge! And yes, LILAC seems quite close to our project. Thanks a lot.

Seeds have a finite seedlife (i.e., the number of outputs that are produced during a seed period);
this is literally everything not to do at once

The Man in the High Castle s02e06 joins a long list of movies and series that try to visually represent the experience of taking entheogens ("tripping"). They results are often beautiful pieces of art, but they never capture the essence of such an inner journey, and I think I just figured out why;
It's not really a visual experience. At least not for me.

Apparently Apple’s autocorrect thinks ‘chonky’ should be ‘Chomsky’. So now my brain is going to make the inverse autocorrect.
