I'm about half-way through Quinn Slobodian's "Hayek's Bastards: the Neoliberal Roots of the Populist Right" and it is outstanding. Beautifully written. Excellently researched. Elegantly argued.
It is eminently readable. I highly recommend. #books

New blog post about #WSocial. I analysed how the EUs new poster child for digital sovereignty is using misleading language about how much of a platform it is, how it is built on dehumanisation and fosters ideas of European and white supremacy. It really is a textbook case for everything wrong with digital sovereignty.

Love James Acaster. His Netflix special/s Repertoire is really good if you've not watched it.

recall how long it took rust to get off of just dumping the entire packaging ecosystem into a single git repo?
the hash function that git uses is of a form designed by ron rivest and has since been referred to as SHA-1. it is essentially unchanged in character from md5, from the same guy

@pallenberg @publixpace @markus_netzpolitik bin schon sehr gespannt darauf!
…I’m not saying that open source and open access isn’t a wonderful thing, but it only stands up because of all the surplus earnings that capitalism generates.
And over production is strangling our future.
And whether we like it or not that’s a conundrum that’s growing
…all of the non-metabolisable surplus that enables anything for ‘free’ is really extraordinarily expensive. Pretending otherwise is a fantasy we’re gonna have to face. But maybe not today, eh?
I’m not nostalgic for computing of the past. The computers I grew up with were fun but they were also bad. A load of things I want to do simply wouldn’t fit in their memory (or on their disks / tapes), would take infeasible amounts of compute time, or both.
But I am somewhat sad that, when those limitations were removed, lack of attention to detail by developers replaced them. Something like the Psion Series 3, Smalltalk on the Alto, or the original Mac were close to the best UIs that it was possible to build in the available hardware.
I don’t want a new machine that’s like the Series 3. It was a great machine for its time, but there are a load of things that I take for granted now that it couldn’t do (for example, the word processor supported styles, but couldn’t render the printer output, and it didn’t support spell checking). What I want is a machine where the same attention to detail was put into the software stack to make everything work smoothly together, to make common operations easy and fast, and to make it possible for end users to extend it in arbitrary ways.
A friend sent me this picture of the local library. The text below reads:
"I think somebody read out from the wrong book at the library".
Tak for påmindelsen.

My mum is a counsellor. She used the phrase "learned helplessness" in passing about ten years ago, and it took me years to understand what it meant.
When you ask for help and nothing is done, you learn you can't change your circumstances. So you stop asking, which has a particular charge to it when you're autistic.
One of the most rewarding articles I've researched and written, as part of my own unmasking and seeing the patterns.

Milo Yiannopoulos has been arrested and detained by ICE and has been ordered removed from the US. Yiannopoulos, a British immigrant to the US, has advocated “ICE checkpoints at supermarket entrances, gas stations, strip malls, intersections and government buildings, with on the spot deportation for anyone who can’t prove they are in the US legally,” “total legal immunity” for ICE agents and “zero immigration in the next 20 years. No ifs, no buts.”
Buh-bye Milo. Don’t let the leopards eat your face on the way out. https://abcnews.com/US/milo-yiannopolous-british-commentator-detained-ice/story?id=136038107
@mitch (Plaintively) but WE don't want him back!!
When even the rent on a single bedroom flat in many cities takes up more than a third of the wages of workers, we can be clear this is a system that rentiers have engineered to capture more of the economic surplus (paid in wages) than can be justified by their contribution to the UK's economic vitality.
This is a crisis of access to affordable living for workers seeking to build even a little life-resilience, not just those seeking to buy a home.

A visiting friend once called me over, saying:
'Hester, I think your cat is broken!'
I sprinted to the kitchen, worried something was very, very wrong. When I came into the room, I started laughing and told my friend that Joris is just an idiot and doesn't know how to drink like a normal cat.
(I've tried different sized bowls, dishes, locations and heights. Sometimes he drinks 'normally', he just prefers to do it this way.)
@Hester
My cat does this too, and she will also eat with hand

- Packages with 1 character names are placed in a directory named 1.
- Packages with 2 character names are placed in a directory named 2.
- Packages with 3 character names are placed in the directory 3/{first-character} where {first-character} is the first character of the package name.
- All other packages are stored in directories named {first-two}/{second-two} where the top directory is the first two characters of the package name, and the next subdirectory is the third and fourth characters of the package name. For example, cargo would be stored in a file named
ca/rg/cargo.

I'm not the only one to note that there is something very wrong in this country when criminal damage to a golf course is rendered as 'terrorism' but marauding white gangs threatening & terrorising people from ethnic minorities are treated as having 'legitimate grievances';
there was a time when I thought claims we were on the road the fascism were over-wrought & hyperbolic, but I have come to the conclusion they were right & I was being complacent.
Democracy is disappearing fast!
Every time I have a snack at an obseen hour of the night I think of a shower thought I read years ago on Twitter. "A child eating a whole cake in the middle of the night is having a wonderful time. An adult eating a whole cake in the middle of the night is having a terrible time."
