People have to make money for their work because we live in the token-based economy called capitalism. And in web journalism, ads are the most usual way and one of the *worst*.
So I’m pleased to see @BylineTimes offering tiered purchasing options of the kind we should have normalised years ago:
- All site content: £44.95/year or £4.60/month
- This author: £10.00/year
- This edition: £5.00
- This article: £0.75
…I’m not saying that open source and open access isn’t a wonderful thing, but it only stands up because of all the surplus earnings that capitalism generates.
And over production is strangling our future.
And whether we like it or not that’s a conundrum that’s growing
…all of the non-metabolisable surplus that enables anything for ‘free’ is really extraordinarily expensive. Pretending otherwise is a fantasy we’re gonna have to face. But maybe not today, eh? Lots more metals use to get through
