Plz boost so I can find cool stuff.
Yesterday I replied to a toot someone posted. Their toot was boggling at how trans women were excluded from the challenging physical sport that is darts. My reply pointed out that chess is also gender segregated, at least at lower levels.
Lots of people replied to me asking why. And the reply is simple.
Men don't like being beaten by a girl. Chess is gender segregated to protect fragile men.
@quixoticgeek interesting edit: chess is not gender segregated the way you describe. There's just more men playing chess so there's a lot fewer women in the top rankings.
Finally got around to watching the 1992 biopic Chaplain, starring Robert Downey Jr. Despite a great showing from a stellar cast, not least Downey Jr's typically masterful portrayal of the silent film legend, this film sank like a stone and is almost never mentioned. I can see why.

The running time is overlong, and the script rambly. A lot happens, but none of it really has time to breathe. Much as I enjoy Anthony Hopkins, I'm not sure his biographer character's leisurely teatime conversations with an older version of Downey Jr's Chaplain really added much to the film other than minutes of runtime. That that could perhaps had been better spent expanding on some of the events of his early life.
But it was worth watching for Downey's physical comedy alone.

yellowkey happened because they added a new thing and a winpe boot-time recovery tool for that, which can be abused to get winpe init to reach a code path that just pops a shell with derived bitlocker keys still in memory
@Rairii@labyrinth.zone @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange @gsuberland@chaos.social @munin@infosec.exchange My comment was mostly a joke, but if you want to take it more seriously I don't see an unintended interaction between a boot time feature and your own OS's disk encryption as distinct from it seeming rushed. That's exactly the type of interaction you should be spending the time to think about when delivering this type of feature. Of course, sometimes something slips through even if you have put all the time and effort in but... it's not inspiring from the outside.
@ynym כשהסכין חד כתער, אין שום הימור.
We made this very motivational comic.

@Niggibib Jupp, hatte ich gelesen und bin dann lieber in der anderen Session sitzen geblieben 🫠
I am moving to a usage-based billing
Dear employer, I will no longer charger a flat monthly salary, instead I will move to token based billing. Included will be every token I receive as input, including but not limited to emails, slack messages, spoken words and mandatory multi-modal meetings that could have been emails. Included will also be output tokens in the form of code, documentation and small talk. Tokens will also be consumed by my internal monolog as I reason about problems.
@max Watch this space - we're starting to warm up our open source engines again, finally.
@ben Happy to hear! Looking forward to see what comes down the road.

Looking at today's schedule... I think I will walk back to the hotel around 16h.
Large crowds are exhausting.
Aand now comes the first slot where I did not need to think which track to watch.
I have zero interest in AI infested things, so I'm gonna stay at the compiler track.
I’m still waiting for someone to match my foolishness, and quote (me on ADRs):
“Decisions are central, and it is a great
template, but you can just hear the
captain in the cockpit yelling "pull up,
pull up" — we'll run into a veritable
forest of decision trees if we speed too
far too fast down that runway just now.
Which decisions?”

lol.
Lesson: friends don’t let friends write stuff, or something like that :)
Security engineer Kabir Acharya has a good op-ed out on how frontier AI models have effectively killed the Capture-the-Flag competition scene, as most competitions don't measure human skill anymore
Worsening extreme weather can also threaten lives and livelihoods in immediate ways.
