So it looks like the Sectric mechanism for the wall clock which was in my Grandfather's office, is toast. The motor shaft has failed and is cracked which is why it kept stopping.

The marking on the mechanism look to be "QEMG 101 41". I'm optimistic I can find another mechanism. It's too small for Euro quartz movements and I want to retain the hands.

My search-fu is failing me on a replacement. Any horologists out there in Fedi-land please?

I think this is the thing people really don't get: there is no basis other than religion on which to base the theory that self-improving software is possible. None.

One doesn't even really need to understand technology to be able to figure this out. You just need to understand human nature. The most prevalent feature of humans, especially technically inclined humans, is

Pine monoculture stands lack those - same age, same height, no light on the forest floor. Nothing grows there except moss (which was all dried out and another fire hazard).

Our oaks and beeches were very resilient - but a lot of small pines died.

We've been removing them from near the house (fire break), and come Autumn will re-plant w beech and chestnut saplings.

Yesterday's dog walk in the Public #forest.

This area was clear cut - the pines was diseased and being attacked by Bark Beetle (there's a helpful little sign by the footpath)

They are not native, but a timber crop - and no new pines were planted to replace. It's been left to Nature. Prob to break up the monoculture for future disease / fire break reasons.

First broom, bracken fern and Birch saplings take over - the Pioneer species. Later Beech and Oak will overtake them.
