I’ve read conflicting things about the COVID vaccines, with some reports suggesting efficiency starts to drop after two months. I wish we had official guidance on correct frequency rather than just ‘the pandemic is over now, you can spend £100 on a vaccine if you want’.
@david_chisnall @PeterLudemann I do believe these are the first coronavirus vaccines? Coronaviruses are incredibly tricky to nail down because an infection from two separate people can have two different potential mutations and if they combine in a third person then all of the sudden within a week or two, you have a brand new thing that your vaccine was not aimed at. Flu virus is way more stable as it requires 2 glycoproteins to successfully change vs 1 for the coronavirus etc etc.
It's so funny that the only objectively correct way to buy something on eBay these days is to view an item and then go away, and wait for the unsolicited cheaper offer to come in your email. If you just buy something right away you'll always get the worst deal.
@misty I was looking at an old computer on an eBay listing just for reference. No intention of buying it. Seller has since emailed me two offers lowering his price to 25% of the original listing. Still not interested, but good to know he likes to wildly inflate his estimates. 😆

I am not going to apologize for saying possibly stupid things about "AI" related nonsense, while the overall reporting conflates LLM/GPT systems with any other (less hyped) forms of what could also be termed as "AI".
When I can log into Gmail and log out again without seeing multiple links to "try some of our AI", I'll try to be more nuanced.

The oven our house came with has been a bit unreliable since we've had it, which is eight years now. Not broken exactly, but doesn't hold temperature well even with a new thermostat.
Rather than buying a new oven, I decided to buy a used Bosch oven from ~2010 for $50. According to the seller it just needed a new fan, and parts for this model are still available at OK prices.
I figured this oven is computerised but not too smart or too complex. It has good reviews unlike a lot of recent model Bosch ovens that seem to fail for baroque reasons like touchscreen calibration(!)
So we buy this cheap broken oven and it turns out it needs three parts: oven fan, fan heating element, cooling fan.
The first two parts are available new at reasonable prices, the last part is $600 from Bosch... Uh-oh.
Or there's a Taobao vendor selling what looks like an NOS version for $30... what a save!
So I'm still hoping to get a quality used oven for the price of a very cheap new oven, plus a few hours cleaning and repair. Also saving an otherwise good product from e-waste.
The cracks are starting to show in this plan, but I'm still happy enough with it...

I don't feel like there was this much lying when I was younger but maybe I wasn't paying attention.
@futurebird Might be that the quantity is the same, but the scope is larger and the quality is so very much lower. These are gigantic lies, and ludicrous ones. There's no real sense that the liars care whether anyone believes them or not.

what method of collaboration became morally unacceptable? do you regard this list to be an attack on free or open source software itself? because I do not think it is. I think it's a warning not to waste any time listening to these specific creeps
These people literally invented the concept of free and open source software. By engaging with it as a concept, we are intrinsically aiding and abetting their moral code, unfortunately. Unless somebody else comes with a similar concept that is independently formed and does not borrow anything from their ideas.

The process has been used by many companies to successfully reverse hijack a domain name, so it's not really unique to CIRA in this type of situation.
