“I made this thing!”
“Why? What purpose does it serve? Who is it for?”
“It is for I, and it serves the noble purpose of pleasing me through the course of its making.”
@timrichards @NewtonMark that's unfortunately the main motivator of governments now - as long as the headlines and sound bites are in their favour, job done

Chinese parents using AI to shame their adult children into marriage aren’t weird. They’re just ahead of the curve.

yes I made altbot
yes I contributed most of the code
yes I run the main instance and have a server in a data center mainly for it
but. altbot is not only my project. i get busy, I get tired, I get bored. i do what I can to maintain and support it. but help from other people would be also very helpful. like, a proper github issue is better than a fedi dm telling me what's wrong. but contributing a fix to it would help me. a lot more than anything else.
i feel like Ive been in this weird in between, like all my code is open source and copy left, but.. its still only me doing the coding.
Ive gotten help from some close friends, with moral support, sometimes even planning, and processing criticism.
but like.. idk, how high is altbot's bus factor? all the code is opensource.. but would anyone actually step up to maintain it? my honest opinion is no.
and I feel that I somehow failed in specifically building a community for altbot. i somehow made it a thing people use and rely on.. but not a thing that people wanna help fix or work on. and I don't know how to change that to be honest.
or how to even change that for future projects. maybe I don't know how to interest other people codewise. but honestly I just dont know.
i really wish altbot had a community which discussed how to make it better all the time, and where I wouldnt even nessicerally be making the big decisions.
or maybe all this is just wishful thinking..
Even if 2026 woke up late in the afternoon, half drunk with a black eye and a twisted ankle, it could still perform better than 2025.
Damn...
That's sounds suspiciously close to one very personal New Year's Day awakening for me in the 70's...

Embarrassing shit, that was.

@cheeaun making this choice at the beginning rather than the end of the process would make the mistakes less likely. At least, I think so!
@evan @cheeaun An alternative could be that when you start a new message that isn't a reply by tagging someone and you then press "Post" to bring up a quick confirmation whether to post it publicly (or whatever your default visibility is) or send it as a DM instead.
Like how some email clients prompt if you want to attach something before sending if you mention the word "attached" in the email but there's no attachment.

The Second-Order Streisand Effect is a social phenomenon where if a party makes an effort to censor information, discussion and news about the censoring attempt paradoxically leads to an increased awareness of Barbara Streisand, a musicians whom most Zoomers would probably have never heard of if not for the Streisand Effect
My mother-in-law deleted her Facebook account because she was pissed of all the spam, bots and scam accounts pestering her. The importance of non-tech users dropping commercial social networks cannot be underestimated.
Spouse just de-activated his Facebook account!!! I did this back in January 2017 as soon as TFG was inaugurated. It felt liberating then, and I hope my husband enjoys feeling the freedom now! Now I just have to get him on #mastodon 😆
