Have you ever tried to mute a hashtag?
There's a helpful dropdown when you click on it, and you'd think selecting "mute #hashtag" from the dropdown would mute that hashtag in one click. Ha, no.
Ok, does it take you to the "add new filter" form with the hashtag pre-populated in the "keyword or phrase" box? Also no.
It takes you to the filters index where you can manually click the "add new filter" button and type in what you wanted to filter yourself.

All language is metaphor, and the metaphors we choose shape how people think about problems and solutions. The “digital drugs” metaphor works because it makes the addictive design clear, but it can also push people into a moral panic frame (“users are addicts”), which risks oversimplifying.
A few metaphors you might find less #blocking of the #hashtag story:
* Food & Nutrition
#Dotcons = junk food (engineered to keep you consuming, empty calories).
#Bsky = diet soda (feels lighter, but still unhealthy).
#Fediverse = a community kitchen (messy, you have to cook and wash up, but nourishing and shared).
* Urban Space
#Dotcons = shopping malls (bright, controlled, profit-driven).
#Bsky = curated boutique arcade (less harsh, but still enclosed).
#Fediverse = the street commons (chaotic, noisy, sometimes rough, but free and collectively shaped).
* Agriculture/Gardening
#Dotcons = monoculture agribusiness (neat rows, efficient, but sterile and toxic).
#Bsky = organic supermarket (nicer branding, but still transactional).
#Fediverse/#OMN = messy permaculture garden (takes effort, community labour, but self-sustaining and alive).
These metaphors keep the critique, from individual pathology to collective space.

#FediAlgo (the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed) v1.2.2 is deployed now. Has a switch that makes sure any #hashtags / users / etc. that you follow are displayed as filter options even if they don't meet the minimum number of recent toots threshold.
Also a bunch of bug fixes and small improvements.

Looking for an affinity group to take the first step #OMN
The #hashtag story is about disempowering the #mainstreaming in our minds. That’s the first step, breaking the spell, realising we don’t have to accept their frame.
The second step is the affinity group forming circle — gathering with others who see through the mess of smoke and mirrors. That circle gives us the power to build the #OMN shovel.
The last step is the work of composting. Taking all the #techshit, the failed projects, the poisoned culture, and turning it back into soil […]

To anyone like me who is not tech minded but on the fediverse, I urge you to discover the power of filters.
It has taken me two years or more to realise that 'no algorithm' means that you need to curate your feed. They are easy to use, but, my word, afterwards you have a much better time.
I find that there is so much repetition of the same message, whether it is pictures of cats, complainants about a right wing figure being racist, or the ongoing danger of covid. A simple filter on the common hashtags and, voilà, a much richer experience. I'm sure that there are other uses, but that works for me.
I'd also like to see more use of hashtags to aid discovery. I'd love it if the culture was to tag the name of anyone discussed. That way I could follow the names of obscure writers, thinkers and artists and find my people. That is as important as alttext for me.

This morning everyone in the region was woken up by a cell broadcast message, warning about possible gas smell in the air in the region. The reason is a leakage in Belgium (of course 😉)
Cell broadcast works perfectly for those one-to-many notifications. Battle proven, working tech. Awesome!
