My mother-in-law deleted her Facebook account because she was pissed of all the spam, bots and scam accounts pestering her. The importance of non-tech users dropping commercial social networks cannot be underestimated.

@gabrielesvelto in our neighborhood we had an excellent Facebook group, neighbors helping neighbors, sharing events, lost cats and dogs. Supportive and inclusive. It has rapidly been dying over the last year. It was the only thing making me hold on to FB.
If the Fediverse would come up with a good moderated group app where people can share hobbies or neighborhoods info that would be a game changer #fediverse

There's another important angle to this. These tech companies have been enshittifying their services for years, with every step aimed at increasing revenue, assuming that users would bear the incremental pain and stick around. This might have reached the point where it actually hurts. I hope it has, because if they reached that point then there's no going back for them.

@gabrielesvelto Something that has caused me dismay in recent years is the number of people – even on fedi – saying they can't live without a social media "support system" or "helpful features" from services like Google Maps.

I lived most of my life without any of this stuff. Something has gone very wrong.
