@insom i saw in your weeknotes that you got a desktop cnc machine! i used a cnc router for the first time a few weeks ago at the local makerspace and i'm pretty excited about trying it again with something fully of my own design. what kind of stuff did or do you plan to make with yours?
@pho4cexa Hey. So with this one I've still been learning the ropes so I've made adaptors for shop-vac hoses and basic stuff so far. This CNC replaced a bigger one I used to have (a Shapeoko 3) -- on that one I made dice trays, a replacement chair seat for a kitchen chair, aluminium signs (including the one on tilde.town's server!), impact tools 😳 and one (1) single-sided PCB (a surface mount microphone pre-amp w/ phantom power like the FetHead), as well as customizing flat pack furniture
@mattiem I’ve kinda been on the not optimist side too - any particular reason you feel that way? For me, it was the actual “Im not writing the output” bit that I had a very hard time with.
And yeah, based on some of these replies, it would seem so about DHH. I honestly don’t know too much about him or his beliefs, just that he made rails and works at base camp.
@jordanmorgan @mattiem he has a spectrum of views, the troubling ones are his ardent advocacy for deeply racist solutions. The tech ones are just your typical tech people passionate one way or another.
That is what I found off-putting when I started to read your blog. I just couldn’t make it past it.

Getting into something called #HomeLab recently has got me back enjoying this. The hashtag has an old style super helpful, knowledgeable community on here.
Self hosting can be fun! Or at least learning about the issues and how to solve them. I'm not sure I'll be hosting anything public but one day maybe...

What we've all seen from higher oil prices and higher gas prices here in the US is that drivers will still pay the higher prices and continue to drive the way they always have. They love their death traps so much that even higher prices won't get them to drive less. If the war with Iran ever ends, why in the world would big oil and big gas lower prices?

Der Auslöser meiner Recherche war ein Sonntag, mit Familie, an einem Gleis mit 3,50 Euro pro 0,5L in einem Automaten, der nur Kartenzahlung akzeptierte.
Das ist a) Wucher („Leistung zu einer deutlich überhöhten Gegenleistung unter Ausnutzung einer Schwächesituation“), b) schließt Menschen ohne Bankkarte von einem Grundbedürfnis aus.
Ist das flächendeckend so und wieso? Daran arbeite ich.

@lake I've definitely seen stray cable and splice boxes hanging all the way down to the sidewalk. It looks as if zero fucks are given and every provider does whatever the fuck they want.
also, I've only been to two other cities in Romania and they did not have this, so it may be a Bucharest-specific issue that they never invested in underground piping (and don't care enough to at least make it tidy like they do in Spain)
A subset (I want to believe a small minority) of people in the current AI industry seem to be part of some kind of wacky AI death cult, driven by a bizarre belief in a mission to create uncontrollable agents of a technological apocalypse.
And then there are the rest of us, who retain the capacity to understand that all this is just computers and software, whether you dress it up as “AI” or not.
As I look up more and more wild plants I come across, I find more and more of them are introduced (and plenty are actively invasive). It's started feeling like a blow each time, like ANOTHER Eurasian one? I keep wondering what should exist in that niche instead, what native plants are missing.
Similarly I saw my first wild mantis last week and got excited because that's a cool bug, but then looked it up and it was a European mantis. There are smaller native mantises here, I hope I see some eventually...
