My button on my old Aftershokz is starting to fail. Had them for so long they're not even Shokz. Is bone conduction still the way to go for open-ear headsets, where you want situational awareness for walking/crossing streets but still need screen reader audio? If so, is Shokz still the brand to go with here or are there better contenders? If not, what are my newer options? I have PixelBuds but their transparency mode leaves a bit to be desired and maybe other earbuds are better in this regard.

Japan has officially entered the flu season, about a month earlier than last year and the second-earliest start since 1999, according to the country's health ministry. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/08/28/japan/science-health/influenza-season-early/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #sciencehealth #influenza #health #hospitals

"But if AI didn't really work as well as they say people would say something about it"

Meta’s $17 billion settlement could mean some pretty big changes for teens on Facebook and Instagram.
Daily time limits, overnight blocks, fewer notifications and even an option to ditch the algorithmic feed are all part of the deal.

@TheConversationUS this is fantastic. This is what good regulation does: not just set rules and make experiences annoying, but put real pressure on harmful capitalist decision making and makes consequences for the societal impacts that normally have none.
RE: https://fosstodon.org/@libreoffice/117172222073531706
A must-read for anyone who uses LibreOffice and cares about the possibility of continuing to use it. Note:
“Advertising-supported software is funded by attention; subscription-based software is funded by the ability to revoke access; and data-driven software is funded by surveillance. TDF has ruled out all three of these options, leaving only the possibility of donations.”
And if you use LibreOffice at work, get your company to buy it. It’s the right thing to do, in the best interest of the company.
I do this because it feels right. I am under no illusion that I am "changing things". I know that change requires collective action, and try to participate in that too. But this kind of tech triage does help me to live more in harmony with my values. With some hard work and luck, our experiments and experiences can even inspire others to join such collective action, and provide food for thoughts.

All this means that @pluralistic has a point: "AI is just another technology". It has its uses. It has societal consequences, most of them bad, starting from its outsized damage to the environment and our efforts for climate change mitigation. It is peddled by a cynical, hyperconcentrated, monopolistic industry, and perched upon a harmful financial bubble. Just like, in various degrees, crypto, aviation and cars (and more!).

White Rhino mothers are notoriously protective of their calves, keeping them close for up to three years. Watching these two move together, the mother with that remarkably long, sweeping horn, was an unforgettable perspective on the scale and beauty of these giants.

"The idea that an organization that is an alternative host—for email, websites, and other services—could be designated a terrorist organization simply for providing a service that a lot of people want…is scary," EFF’s @jilliancyork told @reasonmagazine. https://reason.com/2026/08/27/rubio-uses-terrorism-law-to-ban-secure-email-service/

#WritersCoffeeClub Aug. 28: How do we defend ourselves as artists when the arts are devalued?
Counter-attack. Mock, belittle, satirise, and despise the individuals and movements trying to devalue art. And carry on making great art despite their idiocy.
@algernon damn your linux is a millenial
@ness funny thing... up until 2023, my main desktop had a direct line back to my first Debian install in ~1997. No reinstalls, only upgrades when the hardware changed. That was a ~25 year old install, old enough to drink.
I can still chroot into it. I didn't have the heart to delete it
