1. Sven Nordqvist (Sweden) for his Pettson and Findus series, because it's great fun.
2. Petr Horacek (Czech Republic/UK) for his short books with great illustrations and lessons.
3. Marta Galewska-Kustra (Poland) for her Pucio series books that help children with speech development.

@futurebird Ehh, like I get this but I think the inherited interpretive tradition has value on its own as its own traditional, passed-down meaning,
and yes if we WANT to take the old stories of the bible as valued-for-being-Core-Religious-Text passed-down religious guidance then we're doing a disservice to them by not centering their fundamental plain-text meaning in expressing/experiencing them.
... but the inherited interpretive tradition is ITSELF a Core Religious Text -- even if it has no canonical serialization, and a living form -- that is ITSELF passed-down, and can ITSELF be valued or not, and be done disservice to or not in a choice of how much to center or disregard it.
And like from an external perspective I don't think there's inherent value in doing the former over the latter?
@futurebird (This is me circling to a common bugbear I have with most Christianity I see -- both liberal and illiberal -- that goes REALLY hard into either Sola Scriptura and how "don't listen to the preachers, just read the bible itself for whatever wisdom you personally find in it"/"I hadn't REALLY read the bible until [fundie reawakening]" or into "there is only one original, timeless meaning of the text, guarded and consistent throughout time by the True Church in whatever era",
and BOTH of those perspectives -- even as the fight each other -- deny the presence, history, and dynamism of the iterpretive tradition they have inherited (and shared with each-other, even while being at their sibling's throat).
Which, for all the humanity and human fallibility and agency that make the source biblical texts so rich, is the product and history of SO MANY more humans from SO many more perspectives.
And this is me moralizing but it feels.. /anti-human/, to me, to erase all those hands.)
I've been working on things involving other ways of computing.
I've been re-reading @loriemerson's book (https://www.hemlockbazaar.com/product/other-networks-a-radical-technology-sourcebook-emerson-lori-hardcover/ Other Networks: A Radical Technology Sourcebook) and thinking about what could be different.
I've been going over old notes and thinking about what I want from computers, and drawing diagrams and really just trying to understand how I can have a relationship with computers that isn't defined by capital.
I'm mostly doing this stuff around making toys and media about toys.
For the last 10 years and change, making toys and media (and video games featuring the characters from our toys and media) has been my escape from tech.
But for the last 2 years we've been working on (and have succeeded at!) making toys and media and video games professionally.

I need the power of the #fediverse : For an upcoming presentation I am looking for examples many people will understand where the software caused consumer electronic devices not to work anymore.
E.g. company decided not to update the software which caused the device to stop, company disappeared and e.g. servers not available and therefore the device did not start anymore, etc.
Currently interested in some fresh examples I could use. Any pointers?

youre telling me a "game engine" is this thing that updates a bunch of subsystems in a tight loop for I/O, graphics, sound etc, provides a way of loading/streaming data from disk with caching and background streaming, manages the execution state of units of code which run on specific conditions and themselves may trigger other code, offers features like a GUI framework and multimedia codecs, and provides a platform layer so that all this can run on a variety of hardware? mate. thats called an OS
The problem, as I understand it, is that the house supply needs to stay synchronised to the grid because if that were not so, when the mains comes back on, it would all end badly.
Problem is, if the mains is out, there's nothing for the home installation to synchronise against.
My guess (and it's only a guess) is that the island box isolates the house supply from the mains in the event of a power cut. Then, when the mains comes back, it performs a synchronisation of the house supply prior to reconnecting the mains from the grid. Probably all happens in milliseconds with minimal disturbance to the house supply.

Yes - a box in the island does this.
But it takes about three minutes, once the mains is back on, rather than milliseconds.
