Fast forward to being 13 or 14. My mother has had a rough time separating from my adopted father. One day she was mad at me about something I don't remember. She comes over and starts hitting me. I pinned her down, stared into her eyes, and as calmly as possible said, "If you EVER hit me again, I will break your arm and walk away just like you taught me."

@aschmitz @djsundog (If you do start doing this, the most significant part of Daf Yomi as a cultural institution is the shared communal aspect -- people studying together, people being able to expect that if they are in a random Jewish community in a random place, if someone else is doing Daf Yomi therev they'll be on exactly the same page. So don't do it just-by-yourself-alone.)

Once a year I publish a blog about how Citrix is very unserious when it comes to security but I think I might go apocalyptic this year.

I don’t know if the story will come out about this one but governments etc have been hacked using this one, Citrix knew, and they just tried to hide it. Again.

Pupdate: foster pups are still very shy and timid, but they're *slowly* warming up more. Getting better at playing with each other, and today were happy to just chill on the couch with humans... really timid one is finally just *starting* to explore on her own.

@tante Huh, funny. Whenever there's an anti-AI comment in certain tech-adjacent subreddits, "moderate" jokers will come and wax poetic about how "corporate LLMs are evil, yes, but open-weight models like Qwen are totally nice and wonderful, and using them is OK!".

@EugestShirley Thanks for the concern. We have been having monsoon rains for a few weeks now, though today was dry. I hope that has given the ground a chance to absorb moisture. We are all keeping an eye out for the effects of Polo.

Mastodon cross-posting is now fully-supported in https://some.pics! I tried to make everything as simple as possible, but I'd love any feedback you might have on the setup.

To get started, click the new "Manage Mastodon cross-posting" button on your Pics dashboard page in omg.lol. Authorize the connection to the Mastodon-compatible instance of your choice, and then configure your preferences. You can opt to automatically post all new pics by default, or manually post the ones you wish. You can also set your desired posting visibility (public, unlisted, or followers only).

Pics can only be cross-posted if they include alt text.

When cross-posted, your pic will be attached as media to the post; the post will also have the text description (separate from the alt text, which is attached to the media itself), a link back to your pic's page on some.pics, and any tags that you included on some.pics (which show up as hashtags on the post).

Changes that you make in some.pics should sync up automatically on Mastodon. And within the some.pics dashboard, you can selectively remove any published pics from Mastodon, as well as manually publish other pics that you uploaded before enabling cross-posting.

I hope this helps everyone enjoy sharing more pictures and photography on Mastodon!

@aschmitz @djsundog I'm just saying, how long would it take. Daf yomi is most commonly done for an hour a day -- not trying to understand to the deepest level (there is no "deepest" -- tafoch bah v'taphoch bah), just reading it -- but some people spend more and there are also 5 and 15 min podcasts that give just sorta, something. a detail. one interesting bit.

A daf is, varying per daf, about 1500 words -- usually not in the learner's first language -- not counting commentary or anything. And that langauge is dense as heck, cutting out basically anything that can be inferred -- check out Sefaria, the standard is to bold the English words in the sentence that are more-directly present.

If we say like 300 lines of code?

The daf yomi cycle is ~7.5 years, to do the 2711 dafim of the full talmud.

Wikipedia puts Debian 7.0, the whole thing I think, at ~400 million LOC.

I think the documenting is done by the external resources and Wikidata just makes the information easier to find. Wikidata is not supposed to have unique data... (sic)
