now lenstra writes great papers and is always very clear about time bounds. if the discrete log computation is done within a prime finite field F_q, the lenstra/schoof method factors q - 1 and precomputes quadratic residues for each factor. this precomputation is the exponential part (in runtime and in memory).
so lenstra cracked the discrete log shell once with the q -1 factorization, but nobody has done any better in the past 50 years as far as i can tell. ECC is prone to the exact same attack, since ECC is literally just obfuscated finite field arithmetic
now, if some bell labs has-been like djb really wanted to threaten the safety of discrete log in a way that leaves P significantly closer to NP, i would tell them (like spinrad told his students, implicitly) to look for a robust algorithm for discrete log precomputation that doesn't internally depend upon a recognizer

@mitsuhiko I enjoyed and agreed with this. It seems like the scenario we are going for is “long slow worsening of conditions for 99% of people” and not, say, power-plant compromise or backyard nuke.
Given our collective response to this on the climate, I want to try to be positive about this when it comes to economics, but find it hard to be.

I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist, but the idea that someone like Putin might consider a very efficient way to destabilise a country would be to mobilise a bunch of angry, resentful young men to threaten its emergency responders and council workers is looking increasingly plausible
@afewbugs There isn't some big bad pulling the strings behind the scenes. It's a lot of nasty bastards who've been given permission to get out of their box by decades of pandering to a dangerous loudmouthed criiminal who tapped into their resentments and the latent authoritarianism already in the system - both media and political.
