This evening’s task to to finally work out how to get my Garmin Fenix to track treadmill runs sensibly (if it can).
And at the opposite end of the #running spectrum, I’m looking for suggestions for good route (including trails) mapping and suggestion sites/apps. I know Strava includes them in the paid subscription but I’m trying to resist and AllTrails seems pretty unpopular with users these days so what else do people use?
@simon I know with my Forerunner I’m able to calibrate the distance at the end of a treadmill run, but the metrics (pace, etc.) are still wrong. I’d love to find a better way but I’ve resorted to just calibrating at the end and keeping a mental note of what I care about.
Re: route mapping, I use Strava - but I’ve seen people share routes using plotaroute too. https://www.plotaroute.com/mobile/
But they paywall a lot of functionality, at a price where it may make sense to just use Strava.

@woozle It probably depends on how dominant a form of visual stimulus is in somebody's life, for the most part. But it's well established that many people used to describe black-and-white dreams, but the trend turned strongly down soon after colour TV sets became ubiquitous. Unfortunately, people didn't usually make a note of their dreams' colouredness before the invention of black-and-white cinema, so we don't have strong historic data to study.
@woozle FWIW, in my dreams, colour is usually sort-of-present, but for the most part, most of the time, not particularly salient. I suspect what happens is, the dreams develop downstream of the primary visual cortex, in brain pathways that usually deal with visual input that has already been processed and somewhat interpreted, and colour data is ordinarily only preserved to this stage if it's unusual or particularly interesting in some sense. But I'm pretty sure people have dreams in very different ways, and not all of them are even visual.

I've taken a tip from @civodul and put tor onion services on my machines pointing at ssh. (public key access only of course, ssh + password is a disaster these days).
This means even if I'm traveling, I can access my other machines at home on the go over tor, which is pretty sick

@technomancy this question is clarifying. on reflection i think i'm concerned less about weight (past some reasonable "this is routinely going in a bike bag / daypack" level) and more just missing the kind of thing where a netbook could be balanced on a knee on the bus or jammed in a big cargo pocket.

@sillygwailo I see. Yeah, that sucks. It's like, oh I can fix things on the web layer, but that doesn't fix the way my phone operating system interacts with the browser's notification API and so clicking on a Mastodon notification only works 50% of the time and I don't know how to fix it, etc etc etc. We live in hell
