the more I think on this the flakier utilitarianism seems….

🧵to illustrate further the problem with scale: utilitarianism asks us to maximise the overall happiness in a population. Lets set aside the question of whether that should be the total or the mean happiness (which matters hugely) for the moment

this requires us to be able to measure individual ‘happiness’ on the *same scale* for each individual person (e.g. averaging across two lengths, one in inches one in cm doesn’t work) and that scale has to have the right properties for averaging to be a meaningful operation.

your introductory stats course will tell you about different levels of measurement: nominal (you put data points into discrete categories), rank order (say you have bins like not happy, somewhat happy, super happy - here you know that ‘super happy’ is happier than ‘somewhat happy’, but you don’t know by *how much*), interval scale (you could measure happiness levels like you measure temperature, so you know that the difference between 10 degrees of happiness and 20 is the same as that between 50 and 60), and, finally, a ratio scale (unlike temperature your happiness scale also has a true zero).

These differences between types of measurement/scale matter because they determine the kinds of mathematical operations that are possible. Calculating the mean requires at least an interval scale. >>

@twsh

@sundogplanets because they want some of that sweet sweet venture money that gets thrown around when your press release contains the words space and ai.

@decryption this is one reason I jumped to self hosted NetBird.

@chfkch @allpurposemat I'd suggest enabling generated URLs. That should be the default with the built-in handler, with NSoE, you need to do it explicitly:

declare-handler nsoe {
checks {
generated-urls {
identifiers abrakadabra
}
}
}

Replace abrakadabra with a string that doesn't exist outside of the maze (you can have more than one listed there, and iocaine will choose one randomly).

That won't immediately fix the problem, but as soon as the crawlers start hitting the generated URLs, they'll be trapped.

Then, you can enable the firewall to reduce the amount of garbage iocaine serves.

These things get through, btw, because they're either real remote chromes, or (less likely) emulate them at sufficient level to be hard to distinguish.

Meanwhile, what you can try, is also enabling the Cookie Monster (if using Nam-Shub of Enki):

declare-handler nsoe {
checks {
cookie-monster {
forgejo-hosts forge.example
}
}
}

That'll put up a small cookie wall that I found a lot of these chromes won't pass.

Hope that helps! If not, let me know, and I'll try to figure something else out.

@CrustaceanSingles extraordinary cute, greets to you and the child

I posted a tiny book I made! You can read it for free at https://ko-fi.com/post/Ive-been-making-books-with-The-Child-G2G027YNM6

@randahl
So it is a hypersonic missile, in the terminal phase, that #Ukraine is going to field. That should allow Ukraine to hit Russian ports in Black Sea easily. Though this will not be able to hit the Caspian Sea region without a reduction of warhead size. On the other hand if Ukraine manages to get hold of #Crimea then the situation changes.

Such a useless war this is. 4+ years and counting.

@jannem oh interesting - mycooldomain.au as a cname to tail5361.ts.net (the domain tailscale assigned me) - I'll try it out later

J'ai fait une 'tite boulette lors de la dernière maj de mon instance #Pixelfed.
Y'a des actions en attente qui doivent être rattrapées. Ça va prendre un certain temps ça va faire ramer le serveur.

Désolé !
