I want to break a local community free from Signal, and I've been thinking about XMPP. In reading some analyses I found this gem:

I stopped using Signal because I just don't trust it. Why so many updates with no explanations? Is it so unstable and insecure that it needs them? Also, check out search results for running your own Signal server. Technically it's free software, but practically, good luck.

So I guess I need to figure out persistence and E2EE for XMPP, and land on a server and clients. I'm inclined towards ejabberd, because Erlang!

I'd welcome thoughts.

You want to have encrypted, self-hosted and free software chat? Which standard should you use?

@mason what bothers me the most about signal is, that they are paying yearly millions to amazon and friends. the tech itself is solid, as far as i can tell. maybe look at @delta if you haven't already

@mason @nathanael Erlang is cool, no question, but as to server software, postfix and dovecot are reliable as well. Apart from dovecot focusing mostly on enterprise and corporate deployments (like matrix) both are still solid software, and serve well as basis for #chatmail relay deployments. There are also interesting alternative transport relay stacks in popular use which is how it should be.
