Apparently there is a "backlash" against a Black community setting boundaries for themselves?
I guess that's one thing the fediverse and Atmosphere have in common. People throwing tantrums and demanding that complete strangers listen to their unwanted opinions.
@stefan someone posted a screenshot of the main complaint and they OP was big mad to not be in the in group. not knowing who the OP was, it reeks of caucasian audacity
It's giving so much NIMBY/Karen/HOA energy. I love it here on Masto but I clocked that vibe my first week here.
Black folks want to protect our peace (for good reason.)
Other folks forcing Black folks to sacrifice our peace for their own weird demands is problematic as hell.
@DeliaChristina It is truly, truly disappointing that all we had to do for the fediverse to take off was not to be racist and rabidly opposed to anything that's new and unfamiliar, and we (mainly white people, of course) could not collectively do that as the bare minimum.
Well, for what it's worth, I really do appreciate you, and so many others still sticking around, despite everything.
I still have hope myself!
The bottom line is, while this incident does show that yes, other online communities experience anti-Black racism as well, what makes a difference is the response of that community. Eg. outpouring of support vs questioning and gaslighting the victim.
(And I'm sure the presence of reply controls helps!)
Fediverse has such a long way to go.

@stefan permissioned or private data is also scheduled for AT Protocol main for Q1, according to the recent office hours. So bluesky might get similar too before mastodon
@thisismissem Well, that's being worked on by the Bluesky team, correct? A bit less impressive given the amount of funding they get.
@stefan well, they're split between a LOT of work. Last year was basically a year of putting out fires as the service grew massively, scaling infrastructure better (like sync 1.1), protocol standardisation work, and all that.
There's no shortage of things being done!
(Yes, I know Hometown exists.)
