Brilliant, I just discovered that Mastodon's #translation feature automatically translates the alt text, too.

This feature opens up a whole new world for me. I can follow people whose language I wouldn't otherwise be able to decipher. A place where machine translations are helpful.

@NatureMC

Yes! My "tusky" client helps me understand some toots written in languages that I don't know! I have used the "Translate" feature ("DeepL") to better understand the toot and screen-shots or other alt-texts.

Sadly, I've not yet found a way to easily translate a non-English toot when the author has "EN" set as their language.

If I recognize the language, I can copy-paste that into something like Google translate to get the sense of the toot.

The DeepL & other machine translators *DO* help me broaden my viewpoints!

@SaguaroLynx I could imagine that this problem depends on the client.
When I use Mastodon via browser on my PC, it has included Deepl. One click, and it translates me every language (Deepl has), but I can't translate English posts because this is *my* main Mastodon language. In the browser version it depends on my setting not that of the author - so this might be different with #Tusky.
