I’ve spent the last decade extracting myself from a life that didn’t work.
That has meant therapy, medication, sobriety. It has meant hard decisions about relationships, time, and energy. It has also meant learning to stop letting the outside world dictate everything, and getting to know my internal reality. Then accepting it.
The result is a life that is boring on purpose.

@kristiedegaris @maxheadroom I would not call it "boring". For me it would be like a "quite" and "healthy" state.

As a sober person, I do not socialise much. Alcohol is soaked into our culture, & spending an evening monitoring my own restraint while other people get drunk is not my idea of fun. As a disabled woman with a disabled child, we are careful with health. Energy is in short supply, and raw-dogging virus after virus materially affects our lives and our bodies. As someone with PMDD, and bonus depression, I have to be careful about what I let in. News, people, noise. ADHD dictates a lot too.

I am also very private. Writing a starkly honest memoir seems to convince people that everything is up for grabs. It isn’t. My book is a deliberate construction, not a total account. Some things belong only to me.

Experience has become a commodity, and when the environment is voice upon voice upon voice, the pressure is always the same. Say more, do more, be more. Sell, sell, sell.
For a long time I lived my life open and unprotected. Now, I hold things sacred. Sacred things, by definition, are not content.
Which leaves the question. What do you post about when your life is so carefully curated, and what you're willing to share is too?

@kristiedegaris Thank you for this. At 3 years of sobriety, I feel way more comfortable socializing than when I started. The gift of noticing connections and patterns that comes from intentional sobriety and that curated life can be a source of things to share, maybe. But maybe there is also less need to share?
@kristiedegaris well these posts hit home for me, I guess sharing not necessarily stuff about you, but what you can share about how people might deal with the world as it is, based on your experience without explicitly sharing it?
