For Halloween…

This is the Bakemono Zukushi Monster Scroll, circa est. 18th–19th century. The artist is unknown. It depicts the “yōkai” from Japanese folklore. Specifically shapeshifters known as “ bakemono” or “obake.” They’re also popular in mangas/anime.

These supernatural creatures can also be seen in the Hyakki Yagyō parade:

The Public Domain Review

The Bakemono Zukushi “Monster” Scroll (18th–19th century)

Ghoulish array of shapeshifting monsters from Japanese folklore.
Parts of the scroll in four rows. The illustrations showcase a broad array of creatures, with many different characteristics. Most of them are anthropomorphic, some more than others. They are all hauntingly eerie.
