Does protecting children justify snooping on private messages? That is the sensitive question facing EU countries Wednesday as they wrangle over a push to combat child sexual abuse material online. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/10/08/world/politics/eu-child-protection-privacy/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #politics #privacy #socialnetworks #apps #signal #whatsapp #privacy #childabuse #eu #europe

@thejapantimes No, that's the false framing that chat control advocates push.

Snooping on private messages harms everyone, including children. And it does little to protect them. And it is a horrible instrument in the hands of politicians that want to get rid of democracy and rule of law. Which is why it's unconstitutional in many countries.

And this gets tried again and again every few years.

Luckily, Germany has decided to oppose it again this time, probably because of public pressure.
