First appearing in 1963, by 1971 over 50 million smiley face buttons alone had been produced. T-shirts, stickers and other pop culture appearances were ubiquitous.
🎃 I barely made it through this period with my insanity intact. So it's not surprising that by 1980, the image was ripe for use in dark storylines.

ROGER CORMAN (director Joe Dante's mentor) is waiting to use the phone booth after "Karen White." Notice how he checks for coins in the slot. Dante is joking about how Corman was a penny-pincher.
But this scene is also an homage to director William Castle's appearance at a phone booth in "Rosemary's Baby," waiting for Mia Farrow. (This was actually confirmed June 2025 at a convention)
