First appearing in 1963, by 1971 over 50 million smiley face buttons alone had been produced. T-shirts, stickers and other pop culture appearances were ubiquitous.
🎃 I barely made it through this period with my insanity intact. So it's not surprising that by 1980, the image was ripe for use in dark storylines.
