We have moved to approval-required registration in response to coordinated bot attacks affecting the fediverse. This protects our users, but the platform forces a binary choice: open registration that enables spam and harassment, or approval queues that lose legitimate users to friction.
The fediverse deserves better. There is an open proposal for improved registration options that would benefit instances across the network: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/36747
If your instance has faced similar challenges, or if you believe better moderation tools would strengthen the fediverse, please engage with this proposal. This affects all of us.

The good thing about the #drone appearances over European airports is that they force interior ministers to finally work on actual threats to our societies, and maybe have less time to waste on all those imagined threats like #migration, #antifa, #FreePalestine, and #GoingDark.
Respect for the rule of law is a must for all EU funding.
The proposed future EU budget makes that commitment steadfast.
That is why we are proposing:
✅ Robust safeguards to ensure respect for the rule of law and fundamental rights
✅ Strong incentives to uphold the rule of law and support civil society
✅ Clear conditionalities – breaches must be addressed, or payments can be suspended
Our shared values are essential for Europe’s democracy, security and economic stability.
Then stop #ProtectEU (#GoingDark) and #ChatControl immediately.
Otherwise this is just a giant heap of hypocrisy.
