I'm pouring out a drink for the administrators of the Matrix.org homeserver who are looking to be in for a rough night after major database corruption. Best of luck with the restore, it'll probably be their longest outage for many years.
This does highlight the issues with federated platforms where a large majority stay on one server. Had more people been encouraged to spread out onto other (unaffected) servers, the impact would be far less.

Does anyone know why Matrix doesn't notify you when a picture message is received? It's super annoying. 
And I say Matrix instead of naming a client because every single client refuses to notify for it so I imagine it's something in the spec.
