Breaking news: the tentative ruling for today's #Vizio hearing just came out in favor of SFC's summary adjudication motion! This isn't a final ruling, but indicates how the judge is leaning in advance of the hearing. The hearing will begin at 10am pacific and will likely begin with other cases scheduled to be heard today.

😲 👀 … Judge Leal in #SFC's landmark impact litigation against #Vizio (regarding their violations of #GPLv2 & #LGPLv2_1) is leaning toward partially granting our motion for summary adjudication.

Such motions are difficult to win, so this is amazing.

Judge Issues Tentative Ruling in Favor of SFC

Today, in the Superior Court of California in Orange County, Judge Sandy N. Leal will consider Software Freedom Conservancy's motion for summary adjudication in the Vizio case. The tentative ruling, issued this morning, rules in favor of SFC that Vizio has a duty to provide SFC with the complete and corresponding copylefted source code to the TV it purchased. Tentative rulings are not final; they are issued by the court to indicate how the judge is leaning on the issue, so that oral arguments at the hearing are most effective. The hearing on this issue will take place today, at 10am Pacific time. Information on how to attend is below.

@nivex While I understand your concern,I must ask … is getting full IPv6 infrastructure set up w/ our hosters top priority for #SFC? Should we set aside other urgent work,such as #Vizio case,to do it?

I'll add it low priority on our agenda, but we've a single sysadmin , @paulv, covering all of SFC needs—internal & external.

My job in part is to prioritize limited resources right,so the salient question is: ∃ ppl who'd never see https://giveupgithub.org b/c it has no AAAA record?

LF has developed multiple proprietary platforms (e.g., https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2019/mar/13/lf-community-bridge/ ). Mike Dolan of LF is a friendly witness for #Vizio — a known #GPL violator (See https://sfc.ngo/vizio — we expect to release Dolan's transcript soon).

It's a hard & difficult job to write new licenses, particularly a license that serves the users (& not lawyers and their wealthy Big Tech clients.)

#copyleft- @next will move slowly & steadily. I must focus on the final days of the #Vizio case before trial, but I'm looking forward to my “vacation” after the Vizio trial to be work on #copyleft -next!

It's 01:27 in my TZ. #FOSSY25 wrap party ended about 2 hrs ago. But, sadly, after a near week of so much stuff to do in #Vizio case & #FOSSY, even though I'm exhausted I just can't sleep.

So I came home, & as I mentioned I an #MST3K lifelong fan. I turn on the 24/7 stream to help me sleep.
