It's about a motion VIzio made, asking the court to rule (without any discussion at trial) that there is no installation right in #gplv2. The "tentative" ruling published this morning denies VIzio's request! The parties will discuss further at the hearing to see if the tentative becomes final.

I think you might be conflating v2/v3 here.

Issue *was* raised extensively during #GPLv3 drafting in 2007.

The “joke” appeared in #GPLv2's addendum in 1992 — but RMS wrote v2 alone.

Sadly I'm not surprised no one in FOSS in 1992 complained.

Also keep in mind the slur was mostly common only in the USA South & was out of common usage even there by the late 1980s.

Generally speaking, #copyleft codebases interact best with small-to-medium business ventures rather than advancing the interests of megacorps.

#Mastodon is an obvious example — which has a growing ecosystem of small businesses (like @mastohost) & nonprofit entities working in collaboration.

We see similar in the #GPL'd #Drupal community.

When megacorps get involved with copylefted projects, it's usually to exploit rather than engage — hence the widespread #GPLv2 violations on #Linux.

@landley @eruwero @maybeanerd but if your goal is to "commit asset-denial" against GAFAMs then shure, #AGPLv3 is a shure-fire method to have neither corporate users nor -sponsors…

• If you expect to be paid to maintain #FLOSS you need to find a company willing to do that, and they certainly won't do AGPL but either #openwashing with " #SourceAvailable" shit like #SSPL or choose #0BSD up to #GPLv2.

All versions & variants of #GPL are great licenses. But, today, #GPLv3 turned 18 years old & #GPLv2 turned 34 years old.

At least once in a generation, #FOSS needs a new approach to strong #copyleft.
