I've just watched Fantastic Four, and I really liked it. Beside the last act that was your typical Marvel last act, I thought everything else was pretty awesome. The retro style of course, but not just in the appearance, also in the tone of most of the movie (it may not feel like the real 60s but it definitely feels like a 60s comic) as well as the fact that the movie spends time with the characters. Of course, it helps that there are just four of them (1/2?)
We caught the 59 tram up to Moonee Ponds today to see the Fantastic Four movie at the newish Palace Cinema there. It's a fun movie, and I love the retro-future design aesthetic. Someone must have had huge fun researching and applying a sleek '60s look to every aspect of the film's architecture, furniture, clothing etc.
Also, there's a nice view from the upper terrace of the cinema complex. Didn't think much of the recliner seats though, they're too short and a bit uncomfortable as a result.
(NB we were the only people at the screening, so I didn't bother anyone by taking these pics.)
Watched #FantasticFour again, because we're in Stockholm and we want to watch something in the huge cinema at Mall of Scandinavia.
Still a great movie!
I read and watched a lot of the criticisms after the first time around, and I had them at the back of my head when I watched again. Was the Sue - Moleman chemistry underdeveloped? Was Johnny's linguistics project too out of the blue and its effect too sudden? Was the pacing uneven? Was Julia Garner underutilized? Was Galactus's "clever bugs" comment to silly for its moment?
Nope. Nope. Nope. Well, yeah, but it's a Fantastic Four movie, not a Silver Surfer movie. Nope.
The story might be a bit too linear and rose-tinted for some people, the resolution might be too easy, and swaying the world public from utilitarian ethics to care ethics and virtue ethics with a rousing speech waay to easy. That's a matter of taste. But the craft of the delivery? Storytelling, sound design, visual design, acting ... you can't be fair and call it anything other than rock solid.
The score, my stars, the score. So good and so well used.
A stylish blast from the past! Fantastic Four: First Steps dazzles with retro flair & heartfelt family drama.
But did the story stretch far enough?

Finally saw the Fantastic 4 movie tonight, and really enjoyed it. But came home and dug this vintage item out of my storage. Barely remembered having it. (Spoilers ahead) Was this movie like 80 percent based on this box set? Herbie, Franklin, and Doctor Doom with removable mask!

More reboots of "Superman" and "Fantastic Four" show Western pop culture is struggling for new ideas. This is quite the surprise. Perhaps I will see it after all. Although the most surprising review was
“#FantasticFour Is a masterpiece. the visual effects and the score are a HUGE stand out. Galactus is huge in IMAX. It’s emotional and gives you hope. It beats you off and doesn’t stop. STAY Until the END CREDITS.”

Tonight we watched "Thunderbolts*". It had the banter, even better than I expected, but it also had a pretty good story, character depth and emotional weight. Much better than "Captain America: Brave New World", which felt mostly like filler and an extended version of its own trailer.
After a long and slow post-Endgame Marvel period, I am excited about where this is going. And I'm really looking forward to the Fantastic Four movie, which looks pretty sure to become the first good Fantastic Four movie.
